Hi all,
I'm going to look at a 1998 Pug 106 1.5 diesel. I am aware it will be slow.
Is there anything I should look out for? Any particular foibles or comon faults?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

They the arms on the rear suspension beam. The bearing go with age and it is a sod of a job. Double check all electrics especially the light clusters as they can corrode and let water in. Make sure the aerial is snug otherwise the roof will leak, they can come off as the rubber perishes.

Mostly ok apart from that.

Dan, I had one a couple of years ago, I needed a cheap economical run around.
This car is not!
They are not slow they are very, very, very slow and not that good on fuel either.

I recently got a Pug 306 1.6 petrol for £700, it is a lot better on fuel.

I had two Pugs, a 1.4XND and a 1.5d

The 1.4 had a HG failure and the drivers window would fall out.

The 1.5d I did a lot of miles in (110 miles/day) and also won a couple of trophies autotesting it.

Was very good on fuel if you drove it right, would regularly return 62mpg+ and I reckon on Shell Vpower diesel it was just over 70mpg. However drive it just a little harder and your down to 45mpg.

Gear linkages come apart. I also had smoke from the indicator stalk, a heated rear window that wouldn't work if it was cold or wet out. Jammed vent controls. It also had a leaky rad if it stood in traffic, I replaced both front driveshafts, the clutch, all the wheel bearings, brakes. I also developed a wobble at 65mph+ although this might be due to the bent rear subframe.

Exhaust that fell off a few times and a large fuse under the bonnet that blew one dark night and stopped all the lights except the hazards workings.

I ran one for a few years, traded up to a MG ZR however with the cost of motoring now I will look for a modern equivalent next car renewal time.
The car never failed me, paintwork was in showroom condition when I scrapped it because of mutiple failures at its last MOT. Worn drive shafts, headlights not efficient (they had misted over somehow), other minor niggles, & one advisory, new exhaust needed. The car was indeed slow but for reliable A to B motoring at a cheap price I wouldn't hesitate get a low milage example.

Thanks for the input, chaps. It's blue so if I buy it I may well get some white steelies for it. Don't care if that does make me a chav.
