While I sympathise with the employers predicament you can't be doing that. It's akin to sticking the man in stocks.

sorry its not, anyone could have intervened and they didn't, he could have run away, he didn't.

my brother used to live in witham and it was the talk of the town, and most people agreed he deserved it.

as do i, its disgusting he go to sue, and effectively win, perhaps naming and shaming would put an few more light fingered people off.

So, is it also wrong to print his photo in the newspaper? After all, only a few people would have seen the original "humiliation". Now millions of people have seen it.

Can you really be charged with false imprisonment for performing a citizen's arrest?

He settled out of court because it would've cost him £25k in legal fees to turn up and so £13k was significantly less?

Seems ridiculous.

"AN angry boss who frogmarched an employee to a police station..."

No he did not. Yet another example of tabloids using a word to mean anything they want.

Funny, though, the media can virtually accuse someone of being a murderer because they have white hair and look a bit weird, that's OK, but walking someone to the police station with a sign round their neck is a worthy of £thousands in compensation. He shouldn't have done it but he did, so what? What happened to common sense in this country?

Indeed, not a single bit of frog marching involved. It would be impressive to see one person frog marching another.

That aside, while you can sympathise with the boss, we live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty and guilt is determined by the courts, not joe public.

Sillyness on both sides.

FFS CM you are really starting to annoy me now.

Please desist from posting such well thought out, measured and sensible points.

I've found myself nodding in agreement with all your stuff lately and even though I've not followed up a single post I'm starting to feel like a bloody sock puppet.
Say something stupid and ill advised would you for christ sake so I can have just one smug moment.

I'm sure I read something that before he took him to the police station he detained demanding the money back?

Either way, silly thing to do considering if you look at another person wrong these days you're open to litigation

Hang around and it won't be too long, I promise. On occasion I amaze myself with my idiocy.

The original pic looked like it was staged by a couple of actors.

A £5,000 fine for acting like a tosspot seems reasonable though*

  • Note to self: must remember to call cops next time I find an employee using my chequebook.

You just can't do that to people in this country, this isn't Saudi Arabia. Common sense from the judge IMO.

And yet more serious criminals only get a few years or community service.
