NEED a stop gap barge NOW
Discussion
My wifes A6 has developed a load of electrical gremlins and is going to be off the road for sometime whilst they're sorted.
I need to pick up a daily for her in the interim as we live in a semi-rural location and she needs a car.
I've a purchase budget of 1,000 which I know in this day and age doesn't buy a lot but that's all
I can run to right now.
The car MUST be automatic, and a full size four door or estate, can be petrol or diesel, but I'd prefer no V8's as it is her daily.
I'd prefer under 100,000k but willing to consider if over and preferably within a 50mile radius of cambridge.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hire one for goodness sake.
It's not cheap to hire a car at short notice. Especially not in that class.OP- find a friend or a friend of a friend that knows a car dealer. Tell them your situation. It might be a 'pile' but it'll be a lot cheaper than renting.
ETA- Check eBay or AutoTrader for an older A4 1.8T. As I remember, they seem to be giving them away.

Actually, scratch that. At todays prices you may be better off buying a car.
Perhaps (if you're not afraid of driving something with a bit of rust) a W210 E class? They're huge, but almost always rusted to buggery so can be picked up for pocket change. Milage shouldn't be a problem on these either - at 100k they'll be just run in.
Volvo V70 D5 auto or petrol, reliable, comfortable, even 40mpg(D5). Big miles no problem either. Always get you money back as well. Something like this for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1998-VOLVO-V70-SE-10V-RED-/1...
