Firstly, let me compliment you on your excellent handwriting and use of proper punctuation, especially in your clearly heightened emotional state. I wish my own writings were on a par.

Secondly, I have to agree. My parking was, as you state, a bit st. In my defence, I feel obligated to point out the lack of alternative spaces, and the hedges (lovely in summer, but rather barren at the moment) that overlap the other side of the space I occupied next to your own vehicle, which was itself not exactly central. I did consider finding a space elsewhere, but noting, as you did the ample space on the passenger side of your vehicle as a ready alternative, and being pressed for time I trusted to your patience in this matter.

Thirdly, whilst your note was sufficient to voice your displeasure and ensure more care was taken in future parking endeavours I do feel the two 4 inch scratches you left marking the passenger side of the car were not necessary to emphasise the point. Having spoken to the sports centre I am reassured that they take the precaution of covering the car park, including specifically the area where we were parked and will check the footage at their earliest opportunity. If this proves to reveal sufficient evidence I will then be in touch, my actions at that time to be determined by a poll of an internet forum called Pistonheads.

Depends on the cause of the scratches to my mind. If you parked so the only way they could get in was to open their door into your car, then you had it coming. If it was an intentional act of revenge then it's not on, although you still brought it on yourself.

So you assumed/expected the person to get in the passenger door and climb over? What if the driver was ancient/8 months pregnant/had mobility issues (probably not all 3 ).

Selfish tt IMO.

Irrespective whether you made the best you could of a bad parking situation or parked side-long across 3 disabled spaces, it's not a justification to damage someone else's property. I hope the CCTV proves fruitful, and if it does make their life as miserable as possible.

Did actually consider that, and thought that as it was a sports centre car park they would realise I was likely inside, and if it presented a genuine problem they could come inside and get an announcement put out. Unfortunately this didn't occur to them.

To expand, I certainly don't mean any form of vandalism is acceptable, but I do think the act of purposely parking blocking next doors drivers door expecting them to clamber in through the passenger side is very selfish - how annoyed would you be if this happened to an elderly relative?

Sounds like a tt having a bad day to me and took it out on your car. I'm guessing 5 minutes later he suddenly thought "ah st what have I done!"

You can't go around scratching cars for bad parking, I'm sure we've all been guilty of it at some point! He must be a bit stupid to do that to your car and then leave his parked beside it for you to attack at your peril. Admittedly this would probably have been my response, I don't imagine any action will be taken on him so I would have probably had his mirrors, wipers and 4 flat tyres - juvenile yes, but it's the only language people like that understand.

OP, if they had instead left a polite note asking you to be more careful in future as they had difficulty getting in the car, what would your opinion have been?

If it was "well, I had no option but to park where I did" then they are way out of order.

If it was "I did park like a prick come to think of it" then I bet you have learned a very expensive lesson; being considerate can also benefit you.

Scratching your car is not on though.

If someone behaves in a selfish manner, but in the grand scheme of things no harm is done, then they do NOT have it coming to them if their car is vandalised.

OP, you were ignorant/selfish/whatever in deliberately blocking someone in. But vandalising someone elses vehicle, no way. The note was enough to make the point.

Just curious but if you hadn't been in your "boring round-about" and instead been in P&J Cerb or 993c or whatever you might own would you have still parked like that?

I left a note on someone's car once because they too had parked like a tt and I did have to squeeze across from the passenger seat to get in (genuinely difficult in some cars). I can't imagine how livid I'd have been if I'd been really fat/pregnant/arthritic/one-armed etc.

I wouldn't have dreamed of damaging their car though because I'm not an inconsiderate arse, hence why I aways park carefully

Thanks for reading the post where I explained about the lack of ready alternatives. They had the room on the other side, and if that wasn't enough, the means to contact me to ask me to move.

If I were that kind of person, presumably I wouldn't have noticed my parking was a bit terrible in the first place. I'm not the best person at parking in the world, but if I annoy its due to the amount of time faffing I spend to sort it out. In supermarket car parks etc I'll normally park as far from the entrance as possible to avoid these kind of occurences and have a nice big easy swing at a space.

Anyway, I think given the large split here I'll be settling for a quiet word should the perpetrator be identified.

Count yourself lucky it was just a note. Someone squashed my car in some yonks ago when it was parked up in a busy royal park. My mate tried to fold a mirror of the offending car so that he could open the passenger door a bit more and it just came off in his hands .. well he is a bit ham- some would even say pig- fisted! Needless to say we just left the detached mirror hanging off the door and i hastily made my way out of the car park.

Why didn't you park the driver side (assuming you had room to get out of that side) next to his driver side? - it's not reasonable to expect someone else to crawl from their passenger side (especially if you are 6tf3 with lanky legs like me) - so whilst i don't condone the damage to your vehicle (assuming you can prove it) it's not entirely unexpected.

Only you know if you parked like a tt or not. If you didn't (or you had no other option, or you don't do it everytime etc.) then take them to the cleaners.

Vandalising someone else's car isn't on. Leaving a note smacks of cowardice.

A better way to have sorted this would have been to get the staff to make a pa announcement, wait for the other driver to turn up and if you fancied your chances punch them in the nose.
