All.. now the broadband has reached us, can anyone recommend a wireless ADSL router please? I'm after access via my desktop & the missus's laptop too.

Checked DABS but concerned as the reviews are 'that is perfect' followed by 'this is useless' for all the manufacturers I'd heard of.

Cheers all!

Try a Vigor 2600WE - does the job.
Review here and link to buy it.

I bought a Linksys (part of Cisco) WAG54G from Broadband Buyer ; worked flawlessly. Tech support was very good when I *thought* I needed it (actually a problem at the BT exchange). Highly recommended.

I always recommend Linksys stuff for quality of kit, instructions and ease of use.

what broadband do you have? adsl or cable and is you modem usb or ethernet. if it is ethernent there is a wide range of routers. i have used www.ebuyer.com who are cheap and haev good customer service.
if you have an usb modem then you can buy a kit that has a router with built in adsl modem..
does the laptop have built in wireless? otherwise you will need a card for that too.

Many thanks

Looks like I'll be working from home a fair bit through summer, all being well, cant wait for my new connection!

It's not that I'm that bothered by the speed, though it'll be nice for PH browsing etc, its that latetly my dial up has been so very unreliable & I'm pretty sure it's the phone line. Had a load or rewiring done last year, which helped, but it's never great... wont connect, dropped connection, variable speed when connecnted (right donw to 12kbps last night !!!)

Customer service? Ha, ha ha ha ha ha They wouldn't know what it was if it walked up to them and smacked them in the face (something I have been tempted to do more than once!). If they have your item in stock then I can't fault their delivery times or cost but if there is any issue whatsoever or something you need to ask them then try someone else.

whenever i have had a problem or needed something replaced, i had no problem. everyone has different experiences with companies.
i tried another company, www.microdirect.co.uk on a friends recommendation. bought a shuttle from them and it didn't work properly. sent it back within 2 days of receiving it and it took me 4 months to get a refund. they even wanted to charge me 25% as a handling fee. (absolutly outrageous)
c'est la vie

Does it have to be wireless?

I have my whole house networked using Solwise Powerline which uses the spare capacity in the 13 amp ring main as a network - it's stunningly good! I have four machines networked and it was so easy - and cheap - I was amazed. For more info, try www.solwise.com - I love them to bits! (And no, I don't work for them...)

Except when I bought a Linksys CF WiFi card for my iPAQ. No drivers for PPC2003, and when I emailed them they were most unhelpful. Got it working in the end though (no thanks to Linksys).

..and now I think about it more clearly (as it's the weekend!) really the reason is that we're renting & actively looking to buy somewhere.. so a wireless setup would be perfect

wireless is definately the way to go. is your adsl modem usb or ethernet. it makes a big difference in what wireless setup you can use. if usb, you might have to buy an ethernet modem or a wireless router with built in adsl modem.

At the moment just a bog standard PCI dialup.. which will get binned asap. Have been recommended one of these ADSL routers by a pal...

www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=765&CategoryID=80&ShopGroupID=38

... looks about right to my naive eye. Then I'll get the 2 card previewed on that page.. 1 for desktop, one for lappy. Sounds OK ? Do you know if that laptop card on that page = PCMCIA card. They name it 'Cardbus' which I'm not familiar

the belkin stuff looks fine and the "cardbus" one is for laptops (pcmcia)
but you don;t need a wireles card for the desktop, just connect it via ethernet.

have a look at this setup.
