I need a cheap car- but would like a bit of fun. Ideally no more than £2k, is that doable?

I'm trying to find a car for a mate under £2k, and there is a complete lack of nice stuff that hasnt been to the moon, or isnt french/ste/tatty/dull/gutless.

I think loads are on an airfield after the genius scrappage scheme.

If you can get slightly over £2k budget some fun decent cars out there, this 306 Gti6 looks amazing value.

Lots of early Mk3 Mondeos for £2k. Go well enough, stop well, handle well, can swallow surprisingly big furniture even in hatch form.

I keep on thinking I should change my car (54-plate 1.8LX), but I'm finding it difficult to find something to replace it with. So, it soldiers on.

£500 should find something that may or may not get through its next MOT but has a current ticket and tax. Something with a dent or two in it will be good value if you're not too worried about looks.

Really depends what you want from it. £2k should buy tidy car (although with not a lot lower chance of breaking sooner or later, or failing next MOT, than a £500 car). It's down to luck/gut feeling a lot at this end of the market.
