Full Details: Mercedes C-class Coupe

Mercedes reveals the nitty-gritty on its new sporty coupe ahead of Geneva launch

Mercedes has unveiled full details of its new C-class coupe ahead of the car's in-the-metal launch at the Geneva motor show in March.

The new two-door C-class will go on sale in June, with prices starting at around £30k.

With the E-class coupe having moved a little further upmarket, the new two-door C-class is effectively the replacement for the old CLK, sharing a platform and running gear with recently updated C-class saloon and estate.

Two diesel and three petrol engines will be available from launch in the summer, ranging from a 152bhp four-cylinder 1.8 to the 302bhp 350CGI V6.

AMG fans will have to wait a little longer, it seems. There's no official word on an AMG version as yet, but it's widely reported that an AMG C-class coupe will be on sale towards the end of the year, possibly making a motor show debut in late spring.

Rumour also has it - though again we have no confirmation - that the AMG C-class will get neither the 6208cc naturally aspirated V8 from the C63 AMG saloon and estate nor the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 of the CLS63 AMG. Instead, word on the (web) street is that a non-turbo version of the new 5.5 will be fitted.

Until the AMG arrives, UK buyers will have to console themselves with the knowledge that all Blighty-bound C-class coupes come with an AMG Sports pack as standard, with lowered suspension, 18in alloys and a bodykit.

Another 'wait-and-see' issue will be how the C coupe manages to differentiate itself from the E-class coupe.

Both have similar dimensions and offer similar powertrain options and, although Mercedes hopes the E-class will appeal to more 'mature' buyers and the C-class to younger folk, it's going to be interesting to see how sales pan out.

What an outdated piece of crap.

Joe Bloggs & Mr. Average will be happy and buy them by the thousands.

Not my world. Not my cup of tea.

Call me cynical but I'm thinking all those top speeds are misprints (plus we all know they will follwo the traditional German route of limiting them to 155mph anyway)

This looks good. TBH they should have been doing this 20 years ago, they never had a credible alternative to the BMW 3 series coupes and now they are trying to catch up.

Wouldn't mind a amg v8 powered version, when it comes out...but it'll cost a small fortune.

Is that right? Over 40mpg for a 300+hp V6?

And probably do over 300mph.

Kph indeed. Teach me to cut 'n' paste from a press release for my stats... fixed now...

Yup. Goodness knows how they've managed that one... (cynic in me is screaming 'by learning how to play the system' rather than making an engine that's genuinely efficient in daily driving)

Agreed.

Take this picture; without looking at the front of the red car- what does it remind you of?

...It reminds me of a 5yr old BMW.

Well if it gets near that I'll be impressed.

Having said that, I used to easily average low/mid 30s (and top 40mpg on a run) in my old 130i with 265hp.

Doesn't 'nitty gritty' contravene the PH 'racist posting' guidelines?

Hmm, well I think it's better looking than the 3-series coupe but it's still not an especially good looking car. I think the saloon and estate look more balanced.

All the major manufacturers have the delivery of a new design down to a T. Take the BMW 3 coupe when it came out, dull as dishwater to start with, but then phased in a number of changes, wheels and the M-sport kit - looks meaner and more in tune with current design expectations. Works well.

New Merc Coupe - cue dull as dishwater as they sell the boggo models to lots of people due to pent-up demand for something new. As the volume starts to drop, phase in the AMG models, small visual upgrades and beefier wheels etc. Give it a year or two and I bet they will look quite mean.

Not my cup of tea, but like the CLK, I am sure it will sell well and certain engine / spec combinations will work well.

I really like the look of it. Much nicer than the CLC IMO.

The front is very badly designed.
Or the grille is too high, or the lights are too low, something wrong and hideous about it...

Umm... I don't think so... http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/nitty-gritty.ht...

In fact I'd never even heard of any suggestion that 'nitty gritty' could be considered a racist term until you posted that comment.

Given that the E Class Coupe is already cheaper than the 'equivilent' engine/spec in the 3 Series Coupe, just where is this going to fit into the price range?

I quite like it.

Am I the only one thinking the grille would look better in black rather than gray?
