Yesterday my netgear ds834G adsl wireless router arrived from Amazon.

I have a small problem in that my desktop does not currently have an ethernet card fitted.

can i go and buy one at PC world?
any one in particular?

I have not fitted any hardware before is it simple to follow instructions?
I wondered if there were any websites with oictures that walk you through it?

desktop is a year 2000 dell tower....Thanks for any response.

Dead easy.

1. Pick pretty much any PCI ethernet card from your shop of choice.
2. Switch off your PC at the wall but leave it plugged in.
3. Take the side panel off (on those Dells, there is 1 thumbscrew to undo and then the top and bottom back corners of the panel need to be squeezed in whilst sliding the panel backwards).
4. Locate a free PCI slot (usually a white connector) - preferably NOT the one immediately adjacent to the video card (assuming you have an AGP video card).
5. Discharge static electricity by touching an exposed metal part of the power supply (which is grounded via the mains lead that you remembered to leave plugged in).
6. Remove the blanking plate from the back of the case that corresponds to the PCI slot you have chosen (need a Phillips screwdriver for this).
7. Insert the network card into the PCI slot, noting that it will only fit one way round.
8. Secure the card using the screw you removed in step 6.
9. Replace the side panel.
10. Switch it all back on and watch in amazement as Windows auto-detects the new hardware!

It's unusual for a Dell PC not to have an ethernet port already installed. Yes, you can get one from Percy World and if you have XP installed, it will be as easy as ABC. Turn PC off. Just find a spare PCI slot on the motherboard, remove the blanking plate, carefully push the card in, fit screw and close box up. Start PC and Windowz will ask for the driver disk if it needs it. Follow the instructions on the screen. Hope this helps

Meant to mention, NetGear do basic cards that cost next to nothing and perform as well as anything else I've tried.
