Something to use and sell after 6 months, but must be hassle-free.

Diesel preferred.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking Avensis, Vectra, Passat or Mondeo estate. Or *shudders*, a Zafira or Galaxy.

No offense but does it really matter what it is? Condition is more important than make or model. An older car is likely more stable price wise but more risky issue wise.

Got to be a Volvo 850 my last one cost me 850 quid, ran it for 2 years put 32000 mile on it never let me down once. Just make sure the cambelts been done. Other than 2 tyres and a CV gaitor for MOT was faultless and had 230,000 miles on it and would do that again.

I'd buy on condition rather than make and model, although obviously what you need to check for problems will depend on the model to some extent.

None taken!

Not bothered at all what it is. A late model Skoda would do, for the reasons you suggest.

Another vote for Volvo. Great cars and the older models are superb for chucking stuff in.

Does it need to be a car? If it is for load lugging why not just buy a cheap van or a van derived car? Berlingo Multispace or Renault Kangoo.

The best Octavia or Volvo Estate (maybe an Audi or Passat too) you can find in budget will be the easiest to resell.

The Primera isn't a bad idea either if you want reliable.
