A bit of a tekky question - my BM diseasal has developed a nasty habit of cutting out when I accelerate, happens in 3rd, 4th or 5th, can be accelerating hard of moderately. But it doesn't happen everytime. It is rather annoying when you've got a 40 tonner beside you and a 40 tonner bearing down on you...... If I turn off the ignition, then turn it on again, everything is fine. (had a few panic moments in last few weeks - must get some new underpants!)

Any ideas anyone? And no, I'm NOT gonna change the car just yet!

Get em' to check the vacuum system on the injectors or turbocharger. It sounds like you may have a loose vacuum hose or a knackered vacuum pump. I had a very similar problem with my astra, and the garage I took it to first (local car supermarket/Fiat,Nissan and Alfa-romeo main dealers) fixed it the first time, but then it started to do it again. Later Vaxuhall main dealers found that the garage in question had fitted the vacuum pipes incorrectly and had damaged the pump.

Just an Idea, but it sounds exactly like the fault I had.

I know b*gger all about BM Diesels but the fact that you switch off the engine and switch it on again to clear it, says to me it could be ECU related.
Does the ECU light come up at all, even flash on/off (normally a little bolt of lightning symbol, well it is on V'hall).
By switching off and on again this resets any temp faults, but they should still be stored in the ECU for the guys at the garage to download the details (and the contents of your wallet)
Obviously all IMHO, I hope it helps.

Agreed - the same thing had crossed my mind.

Just as an additional note of caution, be very careful about switching the ignition off and on whilst on the move. You could engage the steering lock I know you'll say no problem but in a moments panic, and believe me you will if it locks on whilst moving, it could be your last thought

Again, agreed...

I once had a Mini, which some scrotes tried to steal. I'll spare you the pantomime story of what exactly occured, but I apprehended the miscreants in the act.

They'd succeeded in breaking the steering lock, but couldn't get the car started (you just need to know how ).

Thereafter, once in a while, fragments of steering lock would engage on 2/3rds lock.. a number of unanticipated U-turns resulted

A slight update....... it seems to happen in 3rd, 4th or 5th at about 3250 rpm under load (ie doesn't happen when accelerating downhill).... But not every time. I think it is ECU/sensor related, as it isn't a loss of power, its a complete cut off. There is no warning light that flickers, ignition light stays off (obviously). And its only since it went in for its last service... Return visit required methinks, with the piggy back unit removed (the supplier of that has never heard of this problem before - suggested a faulty knock sensor?)

Bit of a guess this but on my Freelander (i.e from the era of BMW ownership) I had a problem with complete ignition cut out when they fitted a new windscreen apparently located at the back of the engine bay up on the bulkhead below the screen is a small rubber gromet covered sensor that is meant to detect impact and cut the engine out totally (is this what is meant by a knock sensor??) anyway the windscreen fitter activated it and killed the car, it only required a simple reset but my thought is that if the sensor has an intermitant fault then when the car is pulling it could be shorting and cutting the ignition in and out ?

Quick update......
Turned out to be the crank sensor and the airflow meter.... oh and a dodgy cylinder head and low compression on two cylinders.... Ended up as a £6500 bill for a new engine

Thank God for extended warranties!
