Concept cars.....
Discussion
Seeing as the world appears to have changed and car companies just seem to produce hundreds of 'concepts' that never really go anywhere, I for one am thouroughly bored of them. They make car shows dull as hell as a concept is never exciting as you pretty much know it will never appear as a car on the road. Magazines and PH are also blighted with rolling these things out for the car companies.
Should there not be a ban on them? Just stop publishing anything about a car unless it is actually a car. Ban them from shows and start making the media for the car industry more interesting and exciting again?
It's just akin to Barry showing you pictures of women he'd like to f

Yeah, don't bother with new idea's, just fill the motor shows with stands full of Corsa's and Astra's, and things that we see every day on the roads anyway. That'll make the shows worth going to.
No, just display the new cars that are actually going to be built. I don't see the point in paying money to see something that isn't a car as it will never be for sale. The craze for chucking out myriad concept cars left right and centre is just dull and pointless. If they know they are never going to produce it then they should keep it to themselves instead of using it as a cheap tool to make their company look groovier than it is.
I don't think there are anymore now than there were in the 50'60's etc...
They're a glitzy signpost to the future... eye candy that inspires and pushes the game forward. Stop being so miserable.
Also there are grades of concept cars from the truly sci-fi to the pre-production teaser...all have merit.

I have a book lying in my living room, from the early 90's, when i was small.
It's called "Concept Cars"
Inside, there are variants of the MINI, the new beetle, MGF, Clio, and several others, from before they were production cars.
Car shows would be pretty boring if they didn't show cars they were planning on building in the future. And a lot of concepts are just that. Some aren't, some are ones they haven't decided about yet, so they show them at shows to see what people think of them.
Agreed, but concept cars are no longer 'cars they are planning to build in the future', they are for the most part just marketing gimmicks to get a dull company on the front page and make the people who buy an Astra think they are buying into a groovy lifestyle. It's called "Concept Cars"

A classic example is the 'green' concept car which is specifically designed to make punters think that the car company gives a s

In the last decade they have just become marketing gimmicks for mug punters. Very few 'concepts' are backed by any actual intention to reach production.

I had that book! still have it i think, i see where the op is coming from though. old concepts kind of had an eye on the next generation of cars but the current concepts seem to be waaayyy too far removed from what will be built next. It's called "Concept Cars"

Like in that book was a renault of some sort that previewed the avantime and old megane, i bet my left testicle that the next z4 barely resembles that.
HUD, run flats, Blind spot warnings, lane departure, sat-nav based accident avoidance, Alcantara, LED display, mood lighting, a steering wheel with a stationary hub, LED headlights, a cream car with a brown bodykit, TT, Beetle, Boxster, a gearknob that rises from the centre console....seriously, if 1 in 10 concept cars is a mad expression of an ill conceived impossible dream, I'll eat my hat.
