Hello

The mrs has just been diagnosed with the big C. Although the prognosis is excellent, the consultant we saw yesterday said the diagnosis would likely trigger a payout under any critical illness policy. We do indeed have such cover through work and although I have read the policy navigating my way through the medico-legal mumbo jumbo is a bit of a challenge (and I am a lawyer!). If there is anyone out there who has experience of such matters, is there anything I need to know or should think about before I ring up to start the claims process? It isnt a huge amount but will pay for the new kitchen that the mrs has been after for some time. Thanks in advance, all. I havent yet had the courage to suggest it would be best spent on a new GT3....

Sorry about that diagnosis - been there done that and it ain't fun. If it's breast cancer and you want to talk to someone, I'm at the other end of email no prob.

My OH spent some of my critical illness on a new Cayman - go for it!! Nothing to add on the claim I'm afraid, other than if it's DCIS with breast cancer it probably won't be covered. The insurance company I was with wriggled like crazy getting 10 years worth of medical history but paid in the end. You have to claim ina certain period after diagnosis too, so don't dither too long!!

That's always sad to hear. My only experience of critical illness cover is with my best mate and his wife. She was diagnosed with MS probably 4 years ago. His CI cover paid out straight away, with some checks and opinions, but no hastle.

It's allowed them to deal with things in a most measured way as it cleared the mortgage and left some aside for future house modifications.

Best of British.

knew a guy with ms, he had arranged for a one way ticket to america to meet a female huntress, then he blew the air fare on something not that important and the like, cue around 8 years of a slow slide into death frown

Sorry to hear about your wife OP.

Good to read about the positive effects that critical illness cover is having on peoples lives.

I specialise in arranging these policies on an independent basis for clients and a lot of the time the only stories clients have heard prior to meeting me negative. Insurance companies have done alot over the years to make the claims process as swift as possible, and also offer some valuable benefits post claim.

Yes been through this.
How long have you had the policy and what kind of cancer is it?
If it's skin cancer then it's doubtful they will pay out.

I think you will find them very helpful.

At no time did I ever get and grief from my insurance company, in fact they couldn't have been more helpful.
They will write to the doctor who will confirm the prognosis and they will settle.

Don't assume you need legal advise, just speak to them, get a claim form and fill it in.

If you want to know more please drop me a mail.

PS sorry to hear about your wife !!!
At the risk of highjacking the thread, did your CI pay out for TC Swerni? I thought TC was considered too "cureable" to pay out.

I was diagnosed with TC in Feb '08. After a few weeks we thought of the critical illness cover and claimed accordingly. It paid out but only because the Cancer had spread to the lymph gland, if it was 'contained' within the testis then the claim would be rejected. It took a few months for the paperwork to go to&fro between my consultant and the Ins company, but they had no probs paying out.
Our policy was only 2 years 5 months old when we claimed.

Thanks for all the responses, they are much appreciated. The Mrs has a form of Karposi's sarcoma, which apparently is very rare in non-HIV cases and particularly rare in women (hence I guess why we saw the professor at the Marsden!). She has it in two places at the moment but both are operable so she is due in for surgery on 11th March. I will contact the insurers and let you know how we get on.

Hello - just an update and to say thanks to the PH community. UNUM, the insurer, confirmed that they will pay the claim on Friday. The mrs seems ok and the prognosis is good but strangely fancies a new kitchen rather than a GT3....
