Hey everyone!

I've signed up as i need some info regarding insurance. I know this may have been covered many many times before but i'd like to know the up-to date information.

Is there any current uk insurer that offers 'DOC' or third party insurance to a 20 Year old?

People may ask why i need it?

Well it's because my father doesn't feel like doing long journeys anymore(age related) and it often means using public services which is a headache. I use to have it on my 'Quinn-Direct' insurance since i first had passed although due to the many people who abused the system, it has now been stopped. I mean aslong as it isn't over £3.5k which is my maximum limit for insurance, it would be ideal.

Thanks in advance

why don't you just add yourself to your dads policy as a named driver?

as i doubt you will find an insurer offering doc.

also what war zone do you live in if you are considering paying up to 3.5K on insurance eek thats just madness.

To the best of my knowledge, my brother's insurance policy with RAC gives him cover to drive other cars at 20 years old.

That is, it says he can, and we can't find any exclusions.

My dads on a traders as hes a fulltime car salesman (buys and sells cars) and they wouldnt allow me on the policy until i am 23 but i don't want a traders as it is a very strict policy and sometimes not worth it well in my case it isnt!

well my dad always says 'if you wana play, you've got to pay' so i guess hes right! With my previous policy i was paying about £245-£260 a month average so a little more isn't going to hurt!

I'm not looking to drive 'high powered cars' which people have used for! I would just like the odd cover for general cars such as bmw, merc and vws as these are the only cars my dad deals in and usually nothing over 2.0. Its just sometimes i'd like to share the journey, sometimes i'd need to go and get things for him using his car or parts etc and also as i do not have a policy at the moment, i'd like the best possible!

Your question
Can I drive other people's cars under my own insurance?
Your answer

Depending on your age and the level of policy cover chosen, you may be entitled to drive other people's cars. If you are eligible, then the level of cover provided is third party only irrespective of the cover you have chosen under your policy.

Your certificate of motor insurance will confirm if you have this cover.

It turns out, this policy includes DOC cover, unless it is expressly not mentioned on the certficate.

The level of cover my brother has is FC with the RACs car insurance plus thing added on. Not sure if this makes a difference or not.

Can't find any mention of restrictions on what you can drive, but it's restricted to 3rd party cover and I believe the vehicle must be concurrently insured by the registered keeper/main user in their own name.

Yep just had a look although it doesn't mention of the age. I might just give em a ring tomorrow to see what their quotations are like on my corrado if they will cover me if not looks like i'll be having to buy something more practical! EDIT: Thanks smile

I mean to be honest with you, its just the odd run or so sometimes in the 2.0 mercedes or similar! My dad doesn't like big engined cars! He has being driving for over 25 years and not once he said has he gone over a 2.0 and personally i'm not a fan of high performance cars as i find them rather ridiculous as no matter how fast they are, a normal car would eventually hit 60mph 70mph and i see them pointless.

The link you have posted above to the AA insurance documentation is for a 27 year old and it looks like it is also from 2009 the quote :s
About DOC i've read on here many of time, recently too, that DOC isn't available to people under 25.
Your best bet is calling insurers up tho and asking them.
