If this has happened without any picture distortion, it may be that your cathodes have lost emission. You may be able to fudge it by shorting the resistor in series with the heaters, but this won't be a long-term fix.
I've got a Dell D828L (nominal 17") which I rescued when the local college was upgrading their computers, if Bedford's close enough to you. I've hooked it up to a PC and it definitely works, but I haven't given it any kind of soak test or anything. 20 quid sound OK?
