Best Current Breakdown Service
Discussion
I have finally decided that Breakdown cover would be a good idea to cover myself and my wife on both our cars.
Who is the best company to go with at the mo?
I had heard Green Flag were the ones to go with but recently they seem to have become rubbish!
Review sites seem to say that the RAC, AA and GF are all terrible these days.
The best I could find was a company called IC Breakdown that seem to get good reviews and also seem very cheap. Anyone any experience of them?
cheers

I was with a cheap one called First call (£43 for full platinum cover) for around 6 years. Used them in the past and they recovered me no problems, however they changed the small print this year and ended up leaving me out of pocket to the tune of £700, as I had to pay to get my car recovered. Long story, but radiator burst and I was flying on holiday so wanted the car taking home. It was a Sunday, with a bank holiday Monday and they wanted to put me in a hotel knowing i was flying that night.
I am with the RAC now, The wife and I are covered personally for all cars.

RAC were really good for me.
Twice broke down terminally in the last 6 months and they were very flexible in being able to help me out on getting my car to my destination (which happened to be the mechanic I use both times, what a coincidence!)
The local low load people the RAC contracted the lift out to were both excellent too.
One further point I appreciated from the RAC phone chap the second time round (at 3pm on Christmas eve with a 300 mile journey ahead of me) was that he went against the protocol of having to send out an RAC patrol to verify that my car wasn't fixable (bust oil cooler meant it wasn't fixable at the roadside) and just liaised direct with the low loader people to help me out ASAP.

Ive just joined Gem/autoaid last month.
The policy can be started at a later date if you want it to commence on the expiry of another service.
The cost was £60 for my wife and I, so a bargain. I was paying nearly that for one specific car so now Im covered on both my cars and motorbike for only slightly more.

RAC were good for me over the last few years ..
one bust coil pack on a Saxo leaving it on two cylinders, pumping unburnt fuel into the cat (lots of smoke and burning smell!) recovered home, fixed on the driveway with only a bill for parts
Another time my E46 threw away all its coolant and they sent a recovery truck who dropped the car at the local indy then dropped me home afterwards. Only an hour's wait.

It depends....
If you are the type who can be arsed with paperwork then Autoaid etc where you claim the money back are cheapest.
Tesco etc frequently have RAC on offer.
I use the AA and have done for 20yrs because they cover me not the car (and I drive loads of different ones) they also cover older cars and vans up to 3.5 ton - they are the most flexible in this coverage and they also have discounts for partners and family which brings the cost per driver right down.
They have always been quick and decent with me when I've needed them too.
