Just came across the article here:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1343311/...

about current govt. and EU policy/ruling on immigration and found this quote about Labour interesting (or should that be annoying?)

Blairite apparatchik Andrew Neather, who last year unwisely said openly what such people have long thought privately. Let me remind you that he spoke of ‘a driving political purpose: that mass immigration was the way that the UK Government was going to make the UK truly multicultural’.

And that he recalled coming away from high-level discussions ‘with a clear sense that the policy was intended – even if this wasn’t its main -purpose – to rub the Right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date’.

Seems to confirm what several posters on here have suggested . . .

Time to have a concerted effort to round up and deport a lot.

Very expensive, and very difficult as well thanks to the 'ooman rites bks, but I quite agree.

Hitchens makes some interesting points, not only about what went wrong under Labour but more worrisomely why nothing is going to change under the current administration.

We have several problems when it comes to immigration and as it stands they are being ignored or there is nothing we can do about them:

1 - Mass immigration from the EU: walk along now, nothing we can do here.
2 - Bogus asylum seekers: A decade after Hague spoke about separating genuine and bogus asylum seekers apart, the Tories still don't have a proper policy to deal with this.
3 - Misuse of student Visas - this appears to be reducing but not at a great rate, not sure what the solution is. We have to balance it between not making it too hard for students to come and study here but hard enough to stop the bogus ones coming. University funding is tight enough as it is so not sure if the will is there to reform student Visas much.
4 - British citizens marrying overseas and thus several more people are now entitled to right of entry here - no plans so far from Dave and co to tackle this.

The only place CMD's lot have made progress on is putting a cap on the number of skilled migrants coming here. Ironically these are the type of people we want.

The whole system is a mess and there is no will in the political circles to fix it.

Many of those who came into the country under labour for the 'Skilled migrants scheme' are in unskilled or semi-skilled work.

Labour immigration policies, Convervative immigration polices, barely any difference. Cameron talks tough about mutliculturism not working on one hand, whilst on the other he's fighting to get Turkey into the EU. How can anyone believe anything he says?
