My brother-in-law brought his wife's car over this morning for me to service. After I'd finished, I pointed out to him the 1 bald and 3 barely legal tyres, explained the consequences (both legal and the "your wife might die if she can't stop in time" types) and then made coffee.

While the kettle was boiling I heard him on the phone to his wife, telling her the tyres were "a bit low" irked but they'd probably be OK for ages yet because she doesn't drive very far! yikes

I realise not everyone's rolling in money and can't afford to buy 4 new premium tyres, but FFS, to have the mindset that your wife's safety (and that of anyone else she might hit) isn't worth a couple of hundred quid is beyond me.

What is it with some people?

Brother-in-law = OP's wife's brother.

Would pointing out the potential 12 license-losing points work better?

Just makes it worse that he can't/won't shell out £60 for a set of 4 part worns.

I reckon pointing out the potential licence losing would do more good. Perhaps point it out to the wife directly.

Nobody said they did. Legal ones would be a start.

"4 new premium tyres" is the opposite extreme to "run 'em to the canvas" what is being recommended is a lower cost compromise...

She'll be fine if she only drives in dry weather.... wink

Seriously... If was my wife, sister, mother, friend, anyone I knew etc.. I'd strongly persuade them to invest in new decent rubber when down towards legal limit, if not before..

I doubt he realised the gravity of the situation.

The difference in price is not that significant between a chinese high end (LOL) and a european average tyre. For example, I had to decide to take a Kenda Radial (WTF?) for 49 euro or a Fulda for 52 in 195/65R15 size. Don't have to mention the Fulda won. Pretty good tyre with excellent handling I have to say. 17" and bigger tyres can show more price difference, tho.

So, a set of good tyres for at least 2 years is about 200 euro, which is less than a weekly minimum wage.

And here in the ROI they buy the 49 euro tyres (one by one, never in pairs...), or the cheapest chinese/argentin/indonesian st tyres - while there are two baby seats at the back...

How much money does a life worth?

OP, do the man a favour and get a price for him from Blackcircles or Camskill. He sounds like a bloke who'll just pop down to Quick Phit and pay over the odds for a set of WingWong budgets. You can then sort of understand why he's reluctant to part with his hard-earned. Not everybody realises you can get half decent rubber for the price of a pair of jeans and a jacket.

I tried... And almost fell off my seat when he turned up his nose at the £52-a-corner Falkens and Kumhos, instead choosing the £30-a-corner budget chinese plastic specials that's he'd seen advertised outside his nearest backstreet place.

Still hasn't bothered to get them changed, though... mad

LOL. In fairness having three bald tyres is probably a safer bet than plastic Chinese tyres!

As much as I respect the Chinese they can't make tyres for toffee (although toffee might be a better material).

IMHO st tyres should be banned from sale.

Why do you care that they dont care?. You are 100% wasting your time, its not worth your time trying to, as you see it, help.

Indeed! Also suspect it'll still stop better than a lot of 'classic' vehicles that still are entirely road legal.

I'd say everyone makes judgement calls on safety and most people COULD go that little bit further to have a bit more safety.

Me, I wouldn't risk the points or the puncture if nothing else, this time of year tread is likely to make a lot more difference too, to be fair.
