Had the wheel off today poking about and noticed this .. is it likely to be a MOT fail

NSR pictured, OSR is similar. 2000-reg 328 with 140k.

Are they urgent replacement or a "when you can" thing

Depends how pitted they are but, yes brake line corrosion can be an MOT fail. Yours look pretty bad, I've replaced better on my mini in the past...

I'd say they were buggered. I'd be surprised if that passed an mot.

definately a fail!! unless the tester doesnt look at the pipes eek

anyone with a e36, e46 bimmer beware, as they seem to have both front to rear pipes go like that at a fairly young age rolleyes

id definately be replacing those lines for some cupro nickel pipe pretty soon if i was the OP biggrin

well put it this way, mine were in better condition than that, and they started leaking.

the bad news is, bmw used steel pipes rather than copper, so its not easy to just chop the bad bit out, and put a new piece in as steel is not easy to flare.

the garage that did mine ended up renewing the whole lenth.

i thought the brakes were dodgy on my freelander a while back when i braked hard(foot went to the floor with pressure). another time i braked hard and "she" near didnt stop at all. eventually the nsf pipe burst. asked the local mech what the others were like. "fine" was the reply. brought her back cause of lack of feel. " the back ones wont pass mot " he says.sure enuf the ot centre sent me to get them replaced.

I'll get them changed, but does an MOT tester do more than just look at them to determine how corroded they are? Or is it sufficient to tell just by looking at them (cf. comments about "pitting" above)

Jesus, that is worrying, Yes, they need changing asap, all it takes is a small pin hole and your going to have no brakes very quickly, or even worse if the end is corroded then the whole pipe could pop out leaving you with nothing in the way of brakes (well ok, two wheels will still work because of the diagonal split)

Yes, get them changed asap!

yikes
