2nd gear in the Griffith

I have an early Chim with the same gearbox & it's very similar. It's been like it for a while & I'm convinced it's the remote linkage that's at fault. It's had several new bushes & it deteriorates very quickly. Even though it's basically an old Rover geabox it has a unique selector mechanism, which I'm sure is the culprit.

Where is your clutch biting point?
If it is quite low you may have a clutch hydraulic problem - when changing down you're getting the 2nd gear synchro rings to accelerate up to a good speed pretty quickly - going up the box doesn't create such a speed difference.
A bit of clutch drag could be making it worse.
See if it is any better standing hard on the clutch with the pedal right to the floor.
If its not hydraulics then it could be worn 2nd gear syncro rings - but that doesn't sound likely if its suddenly come on - gearboxes tend to deteriorate slowly unless you've broken something.

Thanks guys, I did wonder if it could be a clutch problem, it bites quite a way down, but with second gear if I am travelling at around 10mph and try to change down, even with the clutch pedal pushed flat to the floor it is still graunching, but if I slow down to 2mph then it is OK. Also I think this has actually been progressively getting worse over a period of time.
