I am booked on to RYA 1 and 2. I was wondering what qualification and experience I would need to take the day skipper course. Would the competent crew course be adequate?

Day Skipper is the natural progression from Competent Crew.

My daughter (16 at the time) and I did just that 2 summers ago, after getting Competent Crew the summer before. I did the Day Skipper Theory course at night school over the winter, she didn't. We both passed Day Skipper, though she struggled a bit to cope with learning both the seamanship and navigation in one course. I would recommend doing the theory first as it definately made the practical easier, it was good fun and I met a great bunch of people on my course.

Here's what the RYA say you need.

I would say from experience that time out on the water is the essential part.
If your new to sailing progress through the courses, but also get out there and get in experience in all types of weather!
Having the theory to sail is completely different to actually sailing and getting a feel for what is happening and why!

I wouldn't bother with Comp Crew; as the above poster said, just get some time on the water and then do Day Skip.

As said, you'd probably get more benefit from Day skipper theory, than Comp crew practical.

Basically there are various paths to take depending on where you want your boating interest to head in the future.
