V8S speedo removal help required

My speedo sender unit has failed and is not able to be refurbished. It's a 8 phase unit so seem unable to find a replacement. I came to the conclusion that the best way forward is to replace the whole system with one that takes its input from the propshaft a-la Ant.'s solution from Speedy Cables used successfully by a few others here.

I spent this afternoon trying to remove my speedo but was unable to figure out how it was to be released. I undid the bolts connecting it to a U-shaped support that runs behind it expecting to then be able to push it out into the cabin and then undo the cables. Unfortunately this didn't happen. Other bolts appear to hold a thicker sheet metal support that appears to be strengthening , does this need to be removed or the veneer trim from the front before the speedo will be set free??

Any ideas or help solving this would be greatly appreciated otherwise its back of to the garage again.

You are exactly right with what you have done removing the U shaped bracket.
It should then push out from the back.
The metal backing plate is to support the veneer.

What finish has your dash got?
Just thinking if it has been covered with sticky back something and its been folded into the hole before the speedo was put back in it may be jammed in.

Try pushing a camera up behind the dash to see if you can get any kind of picture to see whats going on.

You can unbolt the steering column - only 2 x 17mm bolts and it then drops - though beware I think I have knackered my bulkhead bearing doing this

Chris. Why do you think you've messed up the bulkhead bearing? I've been dropping my column a couple of times over the last week or two and now you've got me worried. Prior to taking the seat out the steering wheel was resting on the seat and sup-porting the column, but now the seat is out it's just hanging there.

Well that plastic bit with the triangular hole - its gone!

I just have a round hole now and I can move the column up and down quite a lot where it goes through the bulkhead!

By the way the speedo senders do turn up from time to time - I know Rimmer Brothers had some at one point - I got one off ebay.

Chris, have you got a knackered speedo sender?

I want to use one for a plug, or to get a dummy one made up. Then I can remove mine and it will be up for grabs.

Rimmer Brothers haven't got any at the moment and said that they probably won't again due to it being an obsolete part. I'd like to get it fixed reasonably quickly so that I don't have to mess around with GPS.

Its got a cheap plastic wrap on it so will try to be a bit more persuasive, maybe I was just a bit timid with it.

Better check the bulkhead bearing too as I had to drop the column and remove the plastic surrounds so I could gain access.

PS. Barkychoc - how long did it take speedy cables to turn yours around, I didn't gain a estimate when I spoke to them.

Thanks for the help, It came out with a fair bit of gentle persuasion this afternoon. Now only 4-8 weeks for the replacement to arrive.
