My old camera has gone to camera-heaven so im on the hunt for its replacement.

Needs:

- Cost around £100
- Small so i can take it to nightclubs etc
- 2MP+
- preferably take CompactFlash cards as i've already got a couple.

Possibilities

Sony DSC-P32
Doesn't take CompactFlash but i've been offered it for £110 ex-display, Jessops currently have it for £150. 3.2MP

Canon Powershot A60
Takes Compact Flash but is only 2MP. Amazon have it for £100 down from £130, good reviews.

Canon Powershot A300
Just about to be discontinued but £80 from Jessops store if they can find one.

Any comments? Cheers all

I've noticed that SRS have had a few specials on some stuff going out of fashion - Nikon 4300 at £165; 3100 at £139 and the 2100 at just £99! Can't be bad!

I have the A70, which is the A60 with one more mega-pixel essentially.

Top camera, has enough manual settings to allow me to play (full range of shutter speeds, but smaller apertures would be nice), but still takes good shots on manual mode.

The shape is a little funky (takes 4 batteries) and as such doesn't fit in ones pocket easily (jeans) however it is nice to hold and use.

For £100, the A60 will be a very decent camera! Check out www.stefancarlton.net for images I took with A70 and have a look at www.steves-digicams.com for reviews on all the major digicams available.

docevil... i was offered a A70 in Jessops today for £170. Good deal?

I've upped my budget to £150 after doing some work in the department... its still not simple as i can't find a camera that suits my needs perfectly.

Having bought a Canon A60 I can assure you that at £99 from Amazon (wasn't available last time I looked but appears to be available now), it is a cracking deal. It may only have 2 MegaPixels, but both the Auto and Manual controls take some great photos. So much better than my previous Kodak DC3800 2.1 MP in every way, except size.

I was considering a Minolta Z1 or Z2 (latest 4MP x10 optical zoom), but felt the extra investment in SD cards would just have to wait a bit longer.

I would say so , but I'm not sure it's worth the extra £70 for essentially 1MP...

I would recommend the camera in all but size (doesn't sit in pocket nicely). I got mine for £210 and am very pleased.

For size and point and shoot I have a casio EX-Z4, which is a little more money but does pretty much everything I want for a digital camera.
Its very small (they claim credit card size!!) but is easily a back pocket camera a little thinner than an Canon Ixus. Best of all to me is it has a full 2" LCD, have a look in a store it does make a big difference and compare to 1.5" or 1.8" ones. Casio may not have a history as a camera maker but it does have Pentax optics .

The biggest problem with choosing a camera is there is always a better one for just a few pounds more.

If you want to continue to use your CF cards you've really a choice of two manufacturers Canon or Nikon or else you will have to budget more money for more memory cards.

To be honest a camera from either Canon or Nikon will more than do your job, if you want to spend a bit more than £200 I'd be going for a Canon IXUS II, to meet your criteria.

Its worth trying a pricing site like www.halifaxshopping.co.uk and with the best deal on the cameras you might like to go try them out at Jessops and get them to price match. They only price match on UK sites with items in stock though.

So your not really any further forward than when you started and I don't envy you.

Tell me about it! indeed.

Luckily, my original deadline for purchase before our uni ball isn't as relevant now, as a mate with a EOS300D is going as a photographer and will give me a cdr full of photos from the night

I'm tempted to wait another month and maybe extend the old budget a tad more.

Am i getting old? I'm bloody stingy with my cash now... before i'd buy what i could! Suppose its the fact its my money and not saved up pocket money now...

From what I'm looking at, there aren't many camera's about that are better than the A6/70 tbh, for the money you get a lot of settings to play with and it's a compact.

Yes it doesn't have the style of the Ixus, but it doesn't have the price-tag either. For a snap happy shooter it's great, for a amatuer wanting to learn how to take photos and start fiddling with settings it's also great.

Next step for me will be a digital SLR.

I've just ordered a Canon A310 off www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk for £125 with free next day delivery, free 16mb memory card, tripod and bits and pieces.

Read some good reviews of their service both on the net and from friends and the price was nearly £35 cheaper than Jessops price for just the camera.

Should be here Friday morning

Ah.

Was about to say we bought the in laws a DSC P32 a few months back. A cracking little camera. I couldn't find a bad review of it.

My only gripe was the zoom wasn't much cop, but compared to Emm's digital SLR I wasn't exactly comparing eggs with eggs.

They love it anyway.

I very nearly bought the Sony, but the memory cards i've already got don't work on Sonys and their own make memory cards are rather pricey!

The Canon is pretty much the same as the Sony anyway so im happy
