Tooth repair options (Guildford)

I got that horrible crunch a couple of days ago and had pulled part of a filling out. It's the front of the largest two molars and the original filling was huge running right through the front and back of the tooth.
I have moved and hadn't seen a dentist for a few years so looked up dentists on the NHS Choices website and found one a accepting new patients and got an appointment for this morning. The guy was nice (south african I think), however the surgery seemed a bit tired and he spent very little time inspecting my teeth, so I think given the location (near an army base) it's a cheap 'n' cheerful option for locals.
Anyway, he said the options were a metal inlay, porcelain inlay or a crown, I had to prod for him to explain the pros/cons and longevity. He quoted £400 for a porcelain crown, I said I would go away and think about it.
So.... I work in Guildford where there are many private dentists and the private prices are reasonable (a crown about the same price as I was quoted), so I was planning to get a second opinion and if any good, use them from now on.
Does anybody have a specific recommendation, and assuming I go for a crown, are there any disadvantages of the Cerec system? The pricing seems similar to the traditional method.

Cerec is quite technique sensitive- if you are having one I'd ask how many they've done.
I personally wouldn't have one but the dentist may be an "expert"
The best option is a gold restoration but if you don't fancy the pirate look try a porcelain bonded crown (precious metal covered by white porcelain.)
A good dentist will go through the options with you!

Hence my disappointment at the first, there was zero explanation and it seemed he was expecting me to instantly make the decision right there, although perhaps he assumed I had read up. The problem was I wasn't sure how suitable each one really was for that tooth.Anyway, I stopped in at a dentist near the office and one of them had a quick look and said that it could be filled again but it would end up a complete mess and the next time around it might be a lot more work to crown, so it definitely needs doing. Price there is around £440 but excluding work to initially prepare the tooth.
I was planning to call or stop in at the Waterdene one that does Cerec and ask how long they have been using it, and also my parents suggested I call my old one in Portsmouth since it's probably worth driving the hour for this work.
Worth comparing prices of gold vs porcelain bonded. Massive hike in gold prices recently will not have escaped the Dentist, or the Technician who has to make the the thing. Actually, could be a good thing; when it comes to replacing it again (say 20/25 years for a good one) the price of gold may be so high that the old crown is worth more to you than your pension!
