Hi all,
I've been contemplating a zoom lens for my 400D for some time now; what do people think of this as a proposition?

I presume any recent Canon-fit lens will be okay on the 400D?
It'll mostly be used for taking panning shots of cars.

Very tempted. One person suggested it might be a little slow at 250mm?
I doubt that'd be an issue for me as I'm usually shooting in daylight and I'm usually able to get quite close to the action. I had shots from this year's Le Mans published from my 18-55mm lens, just by frantically panning while practically leaning over the crash barrier. The marshalls weren't amused.

Check back through the forum though, last time (a couple of weeks ago) when someone asked about this lens they got one for £125 new IIRC.

90% sure I'm going to go with it. I don't strictly need it I don't think, so I'm just going to do a quick check on the finances, but it sounds good to me.

Its a fantastic lens, image stabiliser works very well and its a very very sharp lens!! Canon could almost get away with sticking a red L on it in terms of image quaility. Yes it does have a plastic lens mount and you will need to buy a lens hood (doesnt come with one), but for the money it cant be beaten!!
Had I not gone back to a 1 series I'd have kept it for sure.

Don't have this lens but everything I read about it is very positive. +1 to the other "do it"s from me.
f5.6 at the long end is indeed not particularly fast - but I struggle to think of a zoom that's any faster at 250mm for any money.
Primary function of the lens hood is indeed to reduce glare. Also gives some protection against knocks. Makes you look the part too.
