20 stone man binging on snacks so he can lose weight
A diabetic weighing 127kg (20st) is gorging on snacks because he is not heavy enough for weight-loss surgery.
Darin McCloud eats bacon rolls, four packets of crisps and almost a loaf of bread each day to put on the extra 6kg needed for the gastric bypass.
A body mass index (BMI) of 45 and health problems such as diabetes are needed to qualify for the operation at an NHS hospital in Portsmouth, where Mr McCloud lives.
The 45-year-old’s BMI was 40 when he asked to go under the knife two years ago and he has gained 9kg since then.
‘The operation will help my diabetes, help me stop being on insulin and help me with my other problems,’ he said.
‘I still eat, and that I can’t get my head around. There is a switch somewhere but I can’t turn it off.’
Dr Lorraine Albon, diabetic consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, said: ‘If he doesn’t have the surgery soon he will lose his job and add further complications to his diabetes.’
Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, head of public health at NHS Portsmouth, stated he would look at making a ‘business case’ for changing the BMI level for gastric bypasses.

What really riles me with articles like that is that they don't make clear the diabetes bit. the inference almost being that the diabetes is causing his problems.
He is obviously type 2 which has been bought on by stuffing more in his face than his body can deal with. In which case he will have attended many consultations all of which will have pointed out that dietary control is the most important part of the treatment.
So what do we do? Give him a load of medication so he can carry on filling his face safely.
Stuff the gastric band, take away the medication and explain politely that if he doesn't lose weight and control his own blood sugars he will die. The best diet plan ever devised.
The money saved can be put to proper use supporting with research diabetic problems that genuinely have no present option than medical control to resolve.
