I couldn't find a Ford forum so I hope its OK to post it here.

Anyways since having a new exhaust and 4 new tires put on my car I've noticed a big rise in fuel consumption and lack of power (Even more so than usual)

I looked at the receipt for the job (My dad took it down to garage cos I was working) and they've put a 1.3 exhaust for the 89 to 95 cars on. Unfortunaley mines a 96 1100. Will this be causing the problems or shouldn't it matter too much?
BTW the cheeky gets charged fiver for nitrogen in the tires.

On a separate matter the engine uses quite a lot of oil. Usually about 5 litres every two weeks. I think this is down to oil leaking down the valve stems or valve guide seals being knackered. Compression test came out OK. Unfortunately do lots of short runs combined with a twice daily 20 mile hack. Is there anyway to reduce my oil consumption?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Matt

FIVE LITRES OF OIL IN TWO WEEKS!!
Bl**dy Hell!!! Thats alot of oil!

If the oil was going down the valve stems and through the valve seals you would be burning oil, big plooms of blue smoke every time you floor it!!
You might want to check your air box! Mine needs a clean once a month, for some reason the oil is going through the breather pipe form the rocker cover to the bax and accumulates, it isn't as bad as it sounds, thats why I only clean it once a month and not once a week!
Couldn't tell you about he exhaust though! Haven't needed to get mine done yet! Thankfully!!

HTH a bit

Cheers
Stuart!

Tell me about it. Its not cheap either. And these TVR owners always going on about how unreliable their cars are . Funnilly enough I never get clouds of blue smoke when I start her up or when I put my foot down. (Can't say the same thing for the Astra GSi I saw today ragging about in Stretford. )

Cheers Stu, will have a look tonight.

I can't see a minor exhaust change altering the fuel consumption.. afterall its still the same air mixture going in and the same size engine... whilst it may breath a little better with the new exhaust, there's that many bends and baffling in it, plus the limitations of the manifold that there probably isn't any discernable difference at all.

As for the oil 5 LITRES !!!!!! do you have a puddle on the drive ?? If I had a car shifting a pint a day I'd be worried... how many miles per litre do you get?

Cheers,
Matt

I do about 500 miles per week usually so I think thats 200 miles per litre. Sounds worse when you put it like that . I often get a strong smell of petrol if I reverse slowly which suggests the mixture is too rich and would explain the power loss and loss of economy. But how do I check it...??? Bloody cars, more trouble than they're worth

Your 96 Fiesta should have a Cat though ?? and ECU, therefore it should be sorting itself out in the mixture department...??

Sorry.. I struggle a bit if it doesn't have a carburettor... the EFI in the S is technical enough for me

Cheers
Matt.

The loss in power could be any number of things...

Blocked air intake, fuel line, dirty carb/injectors, knackered plugs, leads!

I have just replaced Leads, Plugs, Dizzy Cap, Cleaned the engine internally with that Redex Stuff, and I still get a loss in power every now and then! It just depends on how the car feels when you put your foot down!!!

Matt, a couple of years ago a full valve stem seal replacement cost around a ton at Mr Ford. Indies will undoubtedly be cheaper.

Apropos your exhaust question, the 1.3 and 1.1 exhausts could well be the same. It's worth checking at another exhaust place (cost of a phone call) to find out, or ask Mr Ford again.

If memory serves, the 1.1 was a 1.3 with less stroke, so the cylinder head was the same (racking brain here).

Any other questions, give me a shout.

I have the same problem on my Rover 414i runabout at the moment. My guess (although as yet unconfirmed)...

...blocked catalytic converter.

The lack of power, crap fuel economy, zorst swap not doing much... they all point to the cat. Mine is a 96 car, 75k on the clock (yours similar?) and is noticeably worse when the engine's hot.

Mines a 96 with 65k on the clock although 20kish have been done since september. It sat in London for a year before that.
I haven't noticed it being worse when its hot. Will look out for that though.

BTW Cheers Greg. Will ask a mate who is a mechanic about the exhaust and get a quote for valve seal replacement.

Bit of an update. Tried a few things but yesterday I swopped my exhaust as advised my a mechanic mate. I got a new one 3 weeks ago but it turns out one of the silencers was blocked. Had to have a bit of a barney with the exhaust centre about it. I couldn't work out if they were acting stupid or were just plain ignorant. On reflection I think its the latter Any way it seems to be running better now, using less fuel and the top end is back to a sky high 95mph (Tested on a friends private runway of course )
Domster: sound like your having the same problem as me so it could well be the cat.
Anyways guys cheers for you suggestions. I'm off to Halfords to get some more oil!
