Wow, what an utterly st film. I don't think I've ever seen anything that looked so cheaply and poorly made before. It was terrible. Hollywood did this story (their equivalent at least), it starred Johnny Depp and Ray Liotta and it fking rocked. This however, good lord, what a way to ruin a decent story. I don't know whether it was intentional and the 'look' they were going for but it seemed to consist of random archive footage of the 70s and 80s with Rhys Ifans superimposed into it. Like those scenes in Forrest Gump. Except they looked better. Despite being at least 15years older. I should have guessed how st it would be really from the first five minutes when, bizarrely, they used Rhys Ifans to play Marks as a schoolboy. Yeah, cos that didn't look the slightest bit weird. No sirree

If you've read the book, don't watch the film. Seriously, it's just a wasted effort.

What I couldn't understand was how they managed to make it so boring. I considered turning it off a number of times but stuck with it expecting it to get better. It didn't.

It's completely disjointed as well. It jumps from one scene to the next without explaining how it got there. It was just an utter mess. Then there's the acting, it was basically 'Ifans reads Mr Nice. Badly'.

Haven't seen the movie yet but I did go to see an evening with Howard Marks about the time it came out. Some of the support the night I saw it was dire but the man himself, was very quick witted and quite fascinating.

Completely agree, seemed all over the shop. Compared to the witty and sharp nature of the book, proper flop.

Plus, I'm not sure if I remember the orgies at uni from the book.

Glad I couldn't find this being shown anywhere when it was released then. Epic book, but I hate that Rhys Ifans prick with a vengeance so probably best left unwatched.

Watched it last night and wasn't impressed!

Could have been great but just didn't deliver, blow is a much better film on the topic.

Sounds like the book. Jumping from one thing to another with no explanation. Introducing random characters all the time. Hated it despite loving the subject matter

I really like the book so this was a serious disappointment. It felt like it was supposed to be a much longer film that they cut down in a hurry.

Not surprised the film sucks, for such a good story and interesting bloke it's a very dull book.

Snowblind is an infinitely better book, all round.

I saw this film about 18 months ago when it was still being edited/filmed and filled out a survey thing on it. The director was there too.

I actually enjoyed it paperbag. I wonder if it's changed much?

I can only echo what most of you folks have said. Read the book a few weeks ago after a mate strongly recommended it couldn't put the thing down as it was so damn interesting.

Decided to watch the film last night with the same mate and we were both staring at the screen thinking WTF. Massive pile of tosh, from the crappy superimposed scenes to the way it just cut out huge chunks of the book. We ended up switching it off after 45 mins, and thats a rare thing for me.

If you have yet to read the book, read it and then don't bother with the film. Waste of time and money. I missed out on the talk he gave at Leeds Uni but since he owns a bar in Leeds I will see if I can bump into the man and ask him what he honestly though of the film
