Porsche Launches Limited-Run 911 Black Edition

Extra kit for no extra cash with Porsche special edition

This is the Porsche 911 Black Edition. It's as predictable as three inches of snow bringing the UK's transport network to a juddering halt: just when you think you've got your head round the myriad versions of the 911 Porsche has to offer, Stuttgart throws a curve ball in the form of another new model variant.

This time it's a 1911-car long run of coupes and cabriolets based on the 911 Carrera. The Black Edition is painted in plain black as standard, with Basalt Black metallic available as an option. The electric-folding hood of the cabriolet is trimmed in black cloth. Other exterior tweaks include 19-inch 911 'Turbo II' forged alloy wheels, which cover black-finished (of course), four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers.

The black theme continues inside. There's black lettering on the stainless steel door entry guards, black leather seats and a black dash. Mind you, you do get aluminium-look paint to finish the decorative fascia strip, gear lever and air vents.

The Black Edition also comes with plenty of toys, including sat-nav, park assist, cruise control and a Bose sound system.

Unfortunately there's no extra power to be had, but then again 345hp and a 180mph top speed is reasonable in the first place...

The 911 Black Edition goes on sale from April 2011 and is priced from £67,270 for the coupe and £74,958 for the cabriolet - an increase of precisely zero pounds over standard 911 Carrera models.

Included in the purchase price is the invitation for customers to explore the dynamic attributes of their 911 and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

Is this based on the normal Carrera?

Good that it's at the same cost, bad that it's not available in S or 4/4S form!

Also I'm not a big fan of those wheels on the turbo, certainly not a fan on this car - IMO they look a bit too fussy for the 911.

Let me guess.......every time you press one of these black controls, labelled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up black to let you know you've done it.

So basically, someone's gone through the configurator and select 'black' whenever there was the option to do so?

Maybe I missed it, but are there any 'value added' options included?

Surprising to see that it is not costing any extra.

Nice little tweaks.

The point is you're getting loads of extra options for the same price as a base 911 Carrera making it very good value for money.

Exactly what I was thinking and would have posted if you hadn't already done so.

Rather annoying, no styling quirks or anything to make it stand out from a bogo 911 with black paint. Sport Classic I could understand minus the price but this is a waste of time. They'd have been better leaving things with the GTS to send the 997 off rather than a black 911.

I guess he drives something really unique to be so offended by another mass produced sports coupe!

Show me another mainstream car manufacturer that has produced as many special editions of the same car as Porsche has. Well, apart from Lotus perhaps.

(Bugatti and Pagani don't count as they are built in such limited numbers)

I think 67k I very reasonable for a brand new 911 coupe, i thought they were more.

I think it looks good, it's not exciting though.
