Can a small chip in a windscreen really turn into a large immediate crack if the car drives over a pothole or an iced windscreen is heated as in the Autoglass TV adverts????

No. Unless you're driving a Mk3 Escort, or something else with the structural of a crisp bag.

Doubt very much whether the use of the heated screen would do it. One thing I do know is, that on the way to LM last year, we picked up a small stone chip near Dover, and 100 miles into France, it had become a proper 8" crack. Top marks to Autoglass France.

Is it covered by insurance?

If you'd prefer a recommendation (rather than who your insurer prefers) gimme a shout, I can put you in touch with someone reputable close to where you are or where the vehicle will be.

I once had a stone chip turn into a huge crack after starting the car, turning the heater on with a snow covered windscreen. I've also had a stone chip develop into a crack after going down a pothole so I'm going to answer yes to your question. I think it depends on the stone chip & type of car though, I've had loads of stone chips that have never grown or turned into cracks.
