Banger Rally Insurance

I've tried a few searches for the above but had no luck.

Could anyone offer any advice or recommend a suitable insurer for the above? We're looking for cover to get suitable car from seller straight to MOT station (tax'd but MOT ran out), and then obviously for the banger rally itself- 3/4 days driving across Europe.

Car in question will be big engined Jag/Merc/BMW from Ebay... and we're all below 30. So far, the usual "day insurer" chaps have refused anything given high insurance groups of the cars in question (we currently have in mind an old BMW 750- awaiting ebay outcome).

Any help hugely appreciated.

We used adrian flux but that was mainly because we needed an insurer who was fine with us getting frisky with a angle grinder to the roof

We had an old Merc that I managed to insure on a classic policy for around £140 for a year.

When I did one of these we took out insurance just before leaving for the rally, then used the 14 day cool off period after finishing the rally, and got a full refund

Got another car already ? Call you insurer and ask them for a quote to add a temporary car to your policy. This ropey Jag was only c.£25 for 7 days cover FC with euro cover etc etc for example. Just say it is a temporary car.

Once you've insured it, book it in at the MOT place and drive straight there. This is (I believe) legal. If it fails you'll need to trailer it home.

The Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 said:

22(1)A vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used solely for the purpose of:

(a)submitting it (by previous arrangement for a specified time on a specified date) for a compulsory test, a vehicle identity check, a vehicle weight test or a reduced pollution test, or

(b)bringing it away from any such test or check.

(1A)A vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it(2A)A vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used by an authorised person solely for the purpose of warming up its engine in preparation for the carrying out of—

(a)a compulsory test or a reduced pollution test, or

(b)a relevant re-examination that is to be carried out for the purposes of an appeal relating to a determination made on a compulsory test or a reduced pollution test.

(3)Where the relevant certificate is refused on a compulsory test, or a reduced pollution test, of a vehicle or as a result of a relevant re-examination, the vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used solely for the purpose of—

(a)delivering it (by previous arrangement for a specified time on a specified date) at a place where relevant work is to be done on it, or

(b)bringing it away from a place where relevant work has been done on it.

(4)In this paragraph “compulsory test” means, as respects England and Wales and Scotland—

(a)in the case of a vehicle for which by virtue of section 66(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 a vehicle licence cannot be granted unless certain requirements are satisfied, an examination such as is specified in sub-paragraph (5), and

(b)otherwise, an examination under section 45 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 with a view to obtaining a test certificate without which a vehicle licence cannot be granted for the vehicle. is being used solely for the purpose of—

(a)taking it (by previous arrangement for a specified time on a specified date) for a relevant re-examination, or

(b)bringing it away from such a re-examination.

So you are allowed to drive to, and from, a pre-booked MOT with no tax but applicable insurance. If the car needs work to pass the MOT you are allowed to drive it to a garage or mate's house, but only if you have an MOT failure certificate.
