As per title, any real need to spend £7000 extra on a similarly miled/specced Boxster over the Z?

Similar performance, similarly good looking

"10 a penny" jibes in the 350Z and "couldn't afford a 911" jibes in the Boxster,

Any opinions?

350Z and save the 7K because he Boxster isn't really worth the extra money.

350z has a great drivetrain and a better sound wink good fun as a commuter aswell as a fast road car with the occasional trackday thumbup

Drive a Boxster - you'll figure out why it costs the extra.....

yes In an utterly different league as a drivers' car. So I guess it just depends on what you want.

The 350Z is a very competent car compared to the likes of a RX8 or maybe a TT, but the Boxster is just in another league altogether. It is definitley worth the extra money and I speak from personal experience having had both cars and I still have the Boxster.

Buy the 350Z if you like the sound of a cow dying but want to be recognised by fellow ricers.

Buy the Boxster if you want a proper roadster that looks and drives as much as it costs.

Worth the extra 7K !!! ?

I
must say tho I've only passengered in a boxster 987 S and it felt awesome very precise and 'cliche clinical', but having driven a 'Z' on an airfield I loved it , the engine note is great and the feal is good if anything it feals a little Heavy but great car.
You shouldn't worry about the comments that come with the cars it's a personal choice so who cares what anyone else thinks !

Despite what the others are saying I reckon it comes down to what appeals. Personally I prefer the exterior look of the 350z compared to the Porsche, by quite a large margin. I also like the design of the interior, although I will admit up close the Nissan's dash does look the cheaper in terms of quality of components.

I know this is against an RX-8 but Tiff seems to praise the 350z http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu2JQyEQj_Q

If you want beffy grunt and a hooligans car then I suspect the 350z will provide it far better than the Boxster. If you want fine balanced and more precise tidy driving then the Boxster is probably the answer. It also offers an open air experience.

Yes I think that's a fair summary - the 350Z is more muscle car than sports car. I agree that it's better looking, too.

well a boxster is not just 7k more but almost TWICE the price and it's not twice the car.

but, a boxster is better.

i'd go 350z.

Having driven both - I liked both - but the Z just sounded better, was more of an experience, is actually less common.
The Boxster did flow a little more but I think you would have to be really pushing it on the road to notice. The interiors on the Boxsters seem to wear badly...but the interior on the Z is not brilliant.

The ultimate choice did come down to price/value (and the wife liked it more) and I have not had a day when I have regretted it. Except when it is too cold for the roof to go down.

Whatever you get - just enjoy it.

Interesting choice of cars to compare.I always thought of one as a 2+2 coupe and the other as a 2 seater roadster. the 350 has a great engine note. I've never driven a Z, but have driven a 986 boxster 2.7 and really liked it. A lot. In fact I'm semi considering a 987 s this year. Totally different cars IMO. I'd go for the boxster if it was me, but both are great in diferent ways

I wouldn't even consider a SLK350 (and yes I have driven one)

Although I have seen a nice SLK55AMG which would tempt me - what a HotRod.

For 7k more than I paid a year ago for my 350Z I could have bought a 996 or 911 Carrera 3.2, never mind a Boxster.

M3? Z4M Roadster? TVR?

Sorry I was talking 2005 plate cars with about 40k on the clock, I'm not about to buy new. I see reasonable uk 350zs for around £8k and decent Boxsters for about £15k

This is why I ask, as the spec both in terms of toys and performance seems similar, so I presume the extra £7k gets you far improved handling and the badge?

Pretty much. The interior is a bit better, although it's hardly a work of art, but mostly you're paying for the badge and the chassis.
