Last August I bought a V70 Volvo which was displaying no tax disc. I went to my local DVLA office to put a cherished plate on it fully expecting to have to tax it for 6 or 12 months. The bloke behind the counter then said the tax didn't run out for another 4 months and I could pay £7 for a replacement disc. Then he corrected himself and said I'd have to pay for 6 or 12 months tax as I was the new keeper.

I've just bought another vehicle, how can I tell if it is still taxed without the disc? I object to paying RFL as it is, so to effectively pay twice is unfair.

I dont think it matters if you werent given the disc as the dealer may have cashed it in.

You can check here:

You may well find the previous dealer/owner will cash the tax in though

Ahh, but only the registered keeper can cash in a tax disc now. Apparently the law quietly changed some time ago.
