I'm getting a bit worried about my Tuscan.... when the cars warmed up and whilst pulling away in first, I get a puff a smoke out of the passenger side exhaust. When driving along, there's nothing, its just when pulling away.... is it dying?

it's due a service in 2 months, should I send it in sooner?

Check to make sure you have not overfilled with oil, if you have the speed 6 just blows it out the bores. If not then it sounds like the valves guides are worn, and it is engine rebuild time.

If the guides are warn, the valves do not sit on the seats properly and the this can cause a slight vibration, which leads to the infamous top end rebuild.

Simon, has this car had a rebuild?

Mr F

Edit to say, ask your dealer to do a fluid drop test to see if the bores are leaking oil, or if the pressure test shows one of the bore is lower that the other, this will tell.

Apparently it's not had a rebuild and has been mechanically A1 in its 4 year life. Both the previous owner and I have both taken care to warm her up and treat her carefully when starting out.
I will be absolutely gutted to lose her just before the summer -

Okay where's the closest and best dealer/specialist to Wimbledon (South West London)

Simon, I use TVR Centre and Castle, fantastic people, but that may be too far for you to travel.

Hope its not bad news for you, but these are the symptons I had, and the engine had to be rebuilt.

On the plus side, the Red Rose engine is much more refined when you get it back.

Good luck

The current engine is the standard 4 litre, are you saying you got an RR put in afterwards - was that extra?

I've booked it in at Gatwick TVR as that seems to be the easiest to get to and I've got an AA van relaying it there tomorrow. Anyone have any experience of them? Either way I'll get it fully serviced whilst there.

Cheers

The smoke was blueish...

What sort of cost am I looking at for a top end rebuild and does anyone know how warranty companies (mine is Auto Protect) feel about these claims?

Jigs - yep it's the one I picked up in Edinburgh on the bank holiday just gone

Dont mean to be the bearer of bad news but if it is the valves (which i hope its not could be a multitude of things) the warranty firm wont pay. Wear and tear they will say.

I dont know the costs as mine was covered by TVR but im sure your estimtes will follow.

cue estimates.

Simon, this is surely the dealers responsibility. There is usually a 3 month period of 'good faith' where the car has to be fit for purpose.

I'd get on the blower to them and scream at them. You shouldn't need to go up there, but they damned well should pay for it. If any trouble, fire off a 50 quid lawyers letter.

No, Mine is a RR. Acording to Castle a rebuild is £2300 for top end (depending on work), shockling the same if you blow a headgasket!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As the engine has to come out before you can get the head off...

Really hope you get it fixed soon, but doooooo contact the dealer and see what they have to say. Q? were they a TVR approved dealer?

Tony, did you get yours all done in the end, I lost track threads as I spent some time in Hospital after an accident last year.

no not a TVR dealer - a sports car dealer in East Lothian - very nice guy who used to work for TVR in Edinburgh before they closed down. Have made him aware and will discuss with him in detail as to a plan of action tomorrow.

Oil consumption has rocketed and although
no blue smoke oil is dripping out of
left side exhaust.Looks like valve guides
I imagine. Car had top end rebuild 5000mls
ago so a bit peeved. Will drop it off at Gorners
Today for a proper assessment.
