Recommend Me a Red Wine
Discussion
Im amazed noone has come in and recommended a nice drop of red.
To be honest, if I walked into a supermarket and spent 10-15 quid on a bottle of wine, I would 'expect' it to be pretty good.
I know nothing about wine, other than I prefer Red, tend to prefer 'new world' wines with a decent ABV.
The current favourite grape for us is Carmenere (sp?)
If you have a local wine merchant, pop in on your way home and get them to give you a snifter of a couple of good ones in your price range.
Enjoy

Which grape do you prefer?
Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Pinot Munier, Syrah, Cab Sav, Grenache etc
Or explain in a few words what you like about a wine.
By the way I'm no expert, however I know what I like about the wines I choose.
For example, I prefer Dry reds, In a variety of bodies, not too sweet, not spicy.
So Pinot Noir but from France or New Zealand where climate remains cool, although I've had Southern Australian Pinot and that's not too sweet.
So if you like the same, I can recommend you quite a few! If not, I'm sure some of the more discerning winos will be along later.

If it helps I had some Beronia 2001 Reserva a while ago in a restaurant and I thought it was gorgeous.
This is in your price range. My local merchant stocks a few from this vinyard, this isn't the best but is good for the price.
I don't know where you might buy it from in your area though.

Depending on context will define the wine...
On it's own or with food?
Robust or light?
For drinking on its own I really like the Beaujolais-Villages from Waitrose. Nice as a solo.
With food I tend to go for more powerful wines but, in the £10-15 range, anything you get from a decent wine shop or a decent supermarket will be good.
I really rate Wiatrose for this.

Cabalie 2009 from Laithwaites - I promise you it is an astounding drink and incredibly good value

I can highly recommend a nice Pillastro Primitivo if you can get hold of a bottle. I doubt you will be able to get a bottle at a supermarket. Failing that then you can't wrong with a Barolo, Amarone or Barbera. Black Stump Durif Shiraz is another fantastic wine but you can only get it from Laithwaites as far as I am aware.
Well you had a decent Grand Reserva Rioja. Probably a blend of tempronilla grapes. High alcohol content suggests ripe grapes from the East of Rioja Baja are more your style due to the warmer climate.
Wines from the Navarra may be for you, close to Rioja and in the same climate although I believe the soil is slightly different.
Try wines from South West France such as Bergerac, Buzet was a wine we were into quite a few years ago. A good Bordeaux is hard to beat.
Your South Rioja climate is boardering on the dry summersubtropical/ Mediterranean. Perth and adelaide have similar climates try wines from those areas to nail down if its the grape you like or grapes grown in similar climate. Soil has an influence as well.
If you like the Rioja the New Zealand Pinot might not be your cup of tea.
Hope you find what you like!

Recommended by some family from Austrailia who were really suprised to see it in a UK supermarket. I'm usually a 5 or 6 pounds max person but often buy this as a treat, the Austrailian even said it was a very good price at £11.39 a bottle. I don't know where you might buy it from in your area though.
