On the main GT5 thread and in a couple of other threads, there is starting to be anecdotal evidence that there is an issue with GT5 when using a Logitech Driving Force GT steering wheel.

Specifically, that when you try driving with all driving aids off, a touch of the brake pedal causes the brakes to lock, and you career into the nearest wall / opponent.

A few people have recently mentioned that it is necessary to "calibrate" the brake pedal when starting the game, and that this calibration will fix the locking brakes issue. However, I have not seen any mention of this in any official documentation. I am also unclear about exactly when this calibration should be performed, how often it needs to be performed, and whether you also need to do this to the accelerator.

Another "trick" I have seen mentioned is to reduce the brake bias from the default 5:5 to some arbitrary lower setting. Any further thoughts on this, what the best setting is for realism, and whether you do this once, or have to do it every time you enter a race.

I thought it was worth us having a specific thread to discuss this, as it rather spoils the enjoyment of GT5 for me, and I suspect this is true for others.

So, please post up our findings and best work-arounds on this thread. Do we think this is a "bug" in the game? I have not had to perform a calibration of the brake (or accelerator) pedals in any other game.

Cheers,
Steve

On my DFP setup you calibrate the pedals my pushing them through their whole travel. I'm not sure at what point it will pick this up, but at the start of a run in a car does work. You will notice that there is a travel gauge for the accelerator and brake, next to the speedo and rev counter (I think). The brake one is in red. When you first push the pedal, it may jump to the top straight away. If you push the pedal through its full range it should then calibrate, so when you push half way the gauge moves half, and it should track the pedal movement. Same for the gas. This needs to be done every time you turn the machine on and start the game.

As far as brake bias, I found F5 and R3 or 4 works ok depending on the car. This can be adjusted on the settings page (for each car), go to the brake section and there is a little rotary dial symbol. The setting can be changed there.

This appears to be a well known issue on other forums too e.g. GT Planet. I use ABS on 1 and have no problem. ABS off is impossible as the wheels lock.

I heard this calibration idea on PH only a few days but I have yet to try it.

Edit to state procedure:
If you get the DFGT and suddenly you find the car bogged down it means that the pedals didnt calibrate properly and you need to unplug the usb from the ps3, re plug it in, and while the wheel is spinning you rest your foot on the brake pedal and it should calibrate properly

I'm not convinced there is a problem, for the simple reason it doesn't happen on every car.
Agreed it does happen on some, but surely the fact you can revise the bias to resolve the issue doesn't point or a bug or a problem ? If there was a problem it'd happen no matter what you do with brake bias etc ?

For what its worth when I do get locking brakes I just press the brake lightly and/or modulate the pedal, usually I find that once you've scrubbed off the initial speed you can press the pedal fully and it doesn't lock.

I have started pressing the brake pedal full travel while the counddown to a race is on, and i haven't seen the brakes locking issue recur, but I haven't had much chance to play GT5 recently, so the jury is still out on this for me. I will report back when I have had a chace to experiment more.

I haven't changes the brake bias yet, so far. i will also experiment with that.

Cheers for the feedback so far.

On my DFP pedals if I start a race and have not pressed the brake pedal since starting the game, the first press even if a very small one gives instant full brakes. Until you have pressed the pedal right down it does not know the end point of the brake travel. Try it out and you should find this.
