Which I have no problem with at all. My problem is, I only ever eat 2 types of fish - cod & scampi. Having tried salmon and tuna and found them not to my liking, what should I try?

I'm sure there must be others like me who watched Hugh's Fish Fight and are wondering about this, so what do people recommend?

If you like a meaty fish what about Turbot (okay, it's damn expensive but good!) Monkfish, bass?

How did you try them?
As I have found Salmon for example can have varying strength of its taste depending on how its cooked.

Bass is a fine table fish as are John Dory, Flounder, Red Mullet, Sole, Turbot, Plaice, Mackerel, Skate, Huss/Rock Salmon (Dogfish/Catfish/Wolffish/Tope/Smoothhound) and the list goes on.

Shell fish, well obviously Lobster, Crab, Atlantic & Pacific prawns, Brown Shrimps, Scallops, Razor clams/Shells, Cockles, Langoustine (fresh/live are the best)

Then you got your processed/smoked fish, Haddock, Cod, Salt Cod, Kippers (Loch Fyne are the best IMHO), Arbroath Smokies, Smoked Salmon, Trout, Eel ......

Odd balls would include Squid, Cuttlefish, White bait.

You need to get out more. hehe

I've never been a great lover of cod. In a fish and chip shop I order either Haddock or Rock. Recently I've been cooking Sea Bass and find it really tasty. I also like Tuna and Salmon.

If you like cod, try haddock, pollock, plaice, lemon sole.
Sea Bass is lovely, as is Trout (versatile too).
And for a nice treat, Monkfish - beautiful meaty fish.

I find that a good, cheap alternative to cod (or, my personal favourite, haddock) is Whiting.

Squid is cheap and tasty.

cut into strips. get a griddle pan smoking hot with a brush of groundnut oil.

lay the strips until the squid starts to turn white.

in a wok, get oil hot with garlic, chilli and spring onion white. transfer the squid, add salt, pepper and soy sauce and toss for a minute.

squidge of lime and serve.

Sounds like you like it bland and not oily. Anything cod family should do - pollack, coalfish, ling, hake, haddock, whiting. Also, bass, conger, monkfish, gurnard, turbot, halibut.

Scampi isn't fish, it is shellfish, a crustacean, so you might also like prawn, langoustine, lobster. Also try scallop, squid, cuttlefish, octopus. Crab, brown shrimp and mussels are delicious, but less bland.

just to make it clear for non fishy people, Huss/Rock Salmon is not the same fish as all the ones in brackets here. Also, if you are conservation minded, you should stay away from Tope & Smoothound.

Depends on your skills / equipment, but buying and filleting a couple of lemon sole, cutting into finger sized strips (skin on), dipping in flour - egg - seasoned parmesan breadcrumbs, then deep frying will lead to IMHO one of the most delicious seafood you will ever eat.

Lemon Sole, flounder, plaice etc are pretty healthy in the conservation stakes so you can eat as many as you like. Fish I would not eat is Tope, Bull Huss (Dog Fish is fine), Smoothhound, any Skate or Ray and Conger Eel. Normal Eel I would avoid, because stock levels are low and I'm not keen anyway. Whitebait is soooo delicious, but should also be avoided as it could be made up of any juvenile fish including codling etc.

I developed a real taste for barramundi when in Oz a few years back. Not that common in supermarkets, but I've had it a few times over here and worth looking out for.

The Aussie fish and chip shops I visited were different to ours - more like a fishmongers where you picked the piece / species of fish you wanted and asked for it to be deep fried, pan fried or grilled while you waited.

The chippie nearest us had probably had 15 + different types of fish to try, so we ate there a lot.

Often wondered if that business model would work over here, or if we're too stuck on cod.

I didn't realise scampi wasn't a fish until watching Heston's Fishy Feast last night boxedin but then i've never eaten much in the way of fish. Prawns are good, but i've never really eaten them with anything other than chinese.

Cheers for the advice everyone
