Ok, so my Mrs B and I have been given a £300 Red Letter Days voucher from her company as an Xmas 'thank you'. Sadly driving a DBS or taking a helicopter flying lesson was vetoed and it was er, decided that we'd go to Le Manoir, which was priced at £800 for a night in a junior suite, dinner and brekkie. A lot of wonga but hey, 500 big ones to stay at one of the most fabled hotels in the country isn't a bad deal and you only live once right?

I go to book it and they've jacked the price to £949. So now it's 649 big ones. For one night.
I'm torn. I'd LOVE to go to Le Manoir and this will be the last time I'll have someone else throwing £300 into the pot for us to go, but £649 would go a long, long way elsewhere come holiday time. And despite being as good a right-wing free-market libertarian capitalist as the next PH-er there seems something vaguely distasteful about parting with nearly a grand for a night in a hotel. Hmm.

What do we think? Anyone been? Should I?

Go! You're doing it the right way by staying the night because it means you can sample (extensively) the wine cellar. Great food matched to perfect wines...what's not to like?

That does seem to be suddenly into rip-off territory. I wonder if they might be cheaper at a different time of year?

Failing that, is the Fat Duck an option?

I should have also said...it is rather costly. Is a non-suite an option?

This drives me MENTAL.

SHE gets a bonus, which means that YOU have to spend double that bonus of your money.

WTF!

Wife has emailed Red Letter Days to see if there's a non-suite option. We'll see. There is also dinner, bed and brekky at Chewton Glen which is Relais and Chateaux so I'm sure would be rather nice, and is a more reasonable £499. Might plump for that.

Go...Christine treated me a few years ago cloud9. A birthday surprise, we were on our way back from a week in Cornwall, it was when she directed me onto the M4 (we live in hampshire), I realised something was going on.

Dinner was superb, surroundings & garden are interesting, perhaps not so much this time of year & the rooms in the main house are lovely. I even got to meet Msr. Blanc.

I would love to go back.

Personally I would struggle to justify spending more on a room than the food when the whole point for me is the food. I'd rather stay elsewhere for a long weekend and have lunch on the Friday and dinner on the Saturday with taxis too and from.

It's a jaw dropping amount but it is worth it. And if the price you're quoting includes dinner, then it's a good deal (for there - the suite alone price is around the 900 mark).
Was last there a couple of years ago and I still haven't stayed in a hotel that can match the levels of service they offer.

Can't you use the money just on the food/drink and stay nearby? (plenty of options)

we tend to syat in cheaper hotels/B&B, and spend the money on nicer restaurants under the agreed feeling that most of the time in the hotel you're asleep and then, the only important thing is the bed.

so persoanlly we would love to eat there, but stay somewhere close. And that price seems very expensive!

Did you ask what it would cost without the voucher?
Sometime these companies "load" prices with voucher deals.

For me it's all about the food / drink, so I'd go for dinner and stay elsewhere.

The suite might be fantastic, but you'll be asleep for ,most of the time you are in there, so why pay £500 for that - you could have dinner at Le Manoir and dinner at the Fat duck the following day for £900!

You did better than my wife. We were actually at the check in desk for the Eurostar at Waterloo before she twigged that we weren't actually staying in London for her birthday! hehe

As for the Manoir thing, it does sound exorbitant, even if it is nice!

If it's all about the food really then go in high summer. Blanc makes a big noise about the produce from his kitchen gardens, but they are going to be producing next to nothing at this time of year.

When I first read the OP I thought the price was totally over the top, however now having read the reviews I'm just jealous instead! It certainly seems like one of those things that if you have the opportunity to do it should be taken - have a great time smile

I think that you should go. A mate of mine stays there every year on his wedding anniversary, service and everything about the place is perfect! I live ten minuits drive from the Manoir and ive been for a nose a couple of times but sadly never eaten there. A few minuits drive south of Le Manoir is the Crazy Bear at stadhampton, great for a pint and again the staff are great.
Also nearby at Drayton St. Leonard, The Aston Martin Oners club, open Wednesday afternoons, bloody fantastic!!!!
