The real definition of "TDI"

I have spent years trravelling up and down motorways and average about 35,000 miles a year. Over the years I have seen the coming and going of "Mondeo man" the arrival of "white van man" (usually some tattooed, baseball capped tosser in a Mercedes sprinter) and "BMW man" there are the "dolly-dimples" these are women who drive without the use of mirrors, wear sunglasses (all the bloody time!!) and read things as they drive (maps, books etc.) then we have "executive man" in his Jag or Merc who has to hog the outside lane..... There are also middle lane hoggers, but this rant is about the type of car, not the driver habits really.
Over the last couple of months I have noticed a new phenomenon....."VW TDI man/woman" or "Total Dickhead Inside" to use another term. Day after day I watch these muppets up and down the M1, lane hogging, tailgating,and generally driving way too fast just because the word "Turbo" is in the handbook. I amazed a guy from work the other day by shouting out "TDI" every time we saw a badly driven Passat/Golf and with just one exception I was right every time, a total of 12 cars!!!
I haven't seen a badly driven BMW for weeks. Is it me or can you generalise about a particular make of car? I think it can be interesting to try, even though there are always exceptions to every rule....
I'm convinced "VW TDI syndrome" has replaced "Mondeo/Vectra syndrome" and "BMW syndrome" in one Foul swoop and at last we have only one common enemy....

The problem is Flash that because of company car tax changes the TDI is now the car of choice for those that don't own them. What you are seeing is the same type of person that previously would have been in the Mondeo/Vectra/3 series BMW so no change really it's the "not my motor" syndrome.

I'll tell you why I've specifically noticed these clowns and their lane hogging and tailgating: More than any other diesel powered cars on the road, the VW common rail TDI models pump out massive plumes of disgusting smoke when they're motoring. And when they're lane hogging and filling my face with their discharge I am left with no alternative but to pass on the inside. And when I get past them, they cling to my bumper as if by velcro until they pass the II marker for their junction...
I rail against all diesel cars for their smoke, but the VW is by far the worst and some of their drivers do seem to have supplanted the fabled BMW man..
Regarding tax reasons for running one of these things.. well I can't believe how short sighted the government are being, single mindedly pursuing CO2 targets which even if they achieve, may not achieve anything at all, when there is enormous evidence of the damaging properties of the particulate emissions of diesel engines.

One of my favourite acronms SLI = Slow Learning Idiot.I'm so glad someone else has spotted this phenomenon too. I was waffling on to a friend just the other day about these TDI drivers. They seem to genuinely think they are driving fast cars. Not only have I experienced them tailgating but I've even had a couple try to race me. I know my Clio Williams is no TVR Tuscan, but they must be taking the p*ss. They are soooooooo slow.
What gets to me even more is the way they sit at the traffic lights trying to look cool, thinking they are driving a nice car. Sound insulation must be good on them as the drivers are obviously oblivious to the fact that their pride and joy sounds like a tractor. Do they not realise that the reason their petrol pump is black is because it contains devils juice?

And the 'Randy' Clio Williams was just about to pull out and overtake Jenson Button when he was nicked at nearly 150mph driving a TDI. Bloody slow aren't they. Perhaps you could have caught him when he stopped for fuel, no, second thoughts you would have stopped first.

the past few weeks, Flasher - that's my daily route to and from work in my company 328Ci
I've been giving serious consideration to changing it for a Golf TDi 150bhp as this measure would save me about £3500 a year in tax. If I do, I'll have to specify a de-badged one, so you won't have the pleasure of 'classifying' me as I tailgate you, belching black smoke

But then again when the company car list only has vectras,Mondeos,406's & Lagunas on it only one has the build quality for 30,000 trouble free motoring a year.

I was beginning to think Audi was taking over from BMW as the w*nkers weapon of choice due purely to a fashion-driven image change - perhaps it's more to do with TDI syndrome?
Anybody else noticed the BMW to Audi migration or just me being paranoid? (bit ironic given the Audi advert of a few years ago with the BMW driver saying the Audi @was not him')

I don't really drive on motorways, not much need to these days. So I haven't noticed the TDI syndrome myself. My dad has a Peugeot 406 HDi (company car) and it doesn't seem too bad. Its fairly quiet for a diesel, especially when compared to older diesels (i.e Ford Sierra TD) It sits quite comfortably and quietly at 70/80mph..ish. I must admit that I'm slightly lacking in experience of sportscars, but most TDi drivers probably are too. My dad actually 'thinks' his 406 is fast??, and I suppose for the type of driving he does, it probably is fast enough.
All the marketing hype regarding diesels lately has probably fooled a lot of these TDI drivers into thinking they own sporty cars. Take VW's move to get shot of the Golf Gti 1.8t in favour of the 'GT TDI PD 150', theoretically its as quick as the petrol one.
And BMW's 330D, 0-60 in 7.7 secs is quite pokey for a derv.
I think the TDI group need re-educating....

I just wouldn't then get on the Motorway and act like I was driving a McLaren F1 and that the outside lane was exclusively mine.I shift my Vectra out of the way if something fast comes up behind me,not try to turn it it into a mobile roadblock....

No I'm sorry. TDI's are ALL SLOW. Alot of cars can wind up to 150 down a bloody great hill, doesn't make them a sports car. My little clio might only be a hot hatch but it would abliterate a BMW running on coal.

I don't belive this. I'm not saying that they don't put out any smoke but Ford's seem to put out a lot more, especially after they are a couple of years old.
I think that your comments about TDi drivers apply to drivers of most modern cars - i.e. they are all easy to drive quickly in a straight line - you just press the accelerator and that's it - no skill needed. You don't need to respect the car or any other cars as the roads are so busy then why should quicker cars be let past - they're not going to get anywhere any quicker.
TDi VW's are good all round cars (and yes I do own one so am biased towards them). I would by no means consider them to be a sports car or rapid by any means but they are reasonably quick whilst returning more than 20mpg.
If someone came on here with a TDI saying that they were quicker than a Clio Williams then you'd have the right to flame them IMO but if you accept them for what they are then they are good cars.
