The cheap 2 ton trolley jacks that nearly all motor places and machine mart sell are perfectly adequate. They are about £20 normally, but are a bit bulky to have in the car all the time. Small bottle jacks are also cheap and more compact but are less stable and a bit taller with less lift so not as easy to use as a trolley jack. Also it can be tricky to find a decent flat jacking point for the small tops on the bottle jacks.
I don't know of any universal scissor type car jacks- every manufacturer seems to use a different shape and design of jacking point so it would be tricky to get something compatible with all of them.
Edited because I missed the bit in your post where you said the jack buckled.

I just have a £40 reduced to £20 2 tonne trolley jack at home for working on the car (with axle stands) and keep the original jack in the car for road side puncture repair. I wouldn't want to use the standard one for anything more than a quick lift and back down. For a single wheel change the car is in the air for a couple of minutes at most, and you're not under the car at all. An oem jack should be fine for that.
I'd look for an eBay replacement for the original bent jack, and get a trolley for day to day use.

Handy! I wonder if it'd fit in my 205 where the standard peugeot spec one goes in the drivers side wing
