You'll love it though.
What sort of slower shutter speed stuff are you interested in? Night photography etc? You'll need a tripod either way but this needn't cost you much. You may also want a remote trigger to avoid camera vibration but you can use the self timer to start with.
Here is a great place to pick tips up. Check out the night photograph thread on here. Also worth joining Flickr and browsing the groups on there and take a look at the talk photography forum.
There are some great books for beginners as well. My favourite so far is called Understanding Exposure. A dedicated book about your camera might be useful as well.
Above all, just play around, take lots of pics and enjoy it.

I really want to do water stuff, like this:
Ive bought a tripod to collect with the camera, but not a remote. Like you said, i'll just use the self timer.
