Gearbox mount woes

I have just started doing my winter jobs this evening, the first job on the list is to change the gearbox mount, what I'd like to know is "how do I get the bloody thing off" ? I undid everything and removed the crossmember so the old mount is loose, jacked the gearbox up as far as it will go and it is still not high enough to enable the old mount to be removed, surely this should be an easy job? any ideas.

once you have the crossmember out of the way, and the big bolt out of the mount/gearbox, it should just wiggle out, fiddly but no big deal. I cant think why it would be a problem... does the mount actually move around and just snag on the chassis/gearbox, or is it still stuck rigid to the gearbox ?

The actual mount itself is really loose, its just that it doesn't drop down far enough to actualy clear the mounting lug on the box.

as its a worn mount, can you kind of move the slotted part of the mount within the mount to get extra clearance do you think ? it should be fairly bendy if it is knackered...

It does come out !

Lots of wiggling and eventually you'll find the right angle and position and out it pops, then remember that position to get new one back in.
Sorry I can't be more specific but do remember mine came out just as I was reaching for the big hammer

+1, I bent mine backwards and distorted the rubber till it went pop, the new one went in easier though (surprisingly) but I did smear the rubber (of the mount before we get the Ooo ahhh missus mob ) in washing up liquid first to make it slippery

Putting the gear lever in a forward position (reverse,1st,3rd,5th) gives you more room but even then I found it a pain to remove. Leaving the gearbox in 2nd meant 15 mins of wasted effort trying to remove the mount, but there was no way it would come out. Interestingly, replacing the new mount was simple - it just popped into place.

Finally got it off, after 2 hours of messing about on Sunday night it only took me 10 minutes last night.

hi - looks like my gearbox mount needs replacing.

daft question perhaps, but can it be replaced with the exhaust still fitted?

From memory no, the exhaust has to come off.

need dif mounts and oil seal for gearbox all for S1 or part numbers

Diff mounts are only available now (unless you are lucky) in upgraded form and are expensive - TVR Carparts and Burton power do them that I know of. The gearbox mounts are available in original and uprated form from both the above suppliers, but I'd be careful if going for uprated gearbox mount as fit to chassis may not work

Thanks i did phone TVR Carparts today gearbox mount £40 ish and diff mounts £26 ish
did seem expensive but don't look like i have a lot of choice

That's cheap ! think that must be the front ones? the big thing at the back is no longer available from Ford, up-graded versions are available from specialists but around the £80-100 mark.

Gearbox mount is Cortina/Capri, usually some on Ebay.

Might be worth looking at buying a full Diff on ebay as these often come complete with the mount for less than the cost of new mounts. If its local you could go and take a look. Make sure its the correct size mount as there are at least two sizes on the 7.5 inch Diff. If you are really lucky you will find a suitable 3.64:1 ratio diff with 100 mm flanges and in LSD with said mount... good luck on that one

if the second hand diff looks in good original condition and is off a low cc sierra it should have had an easy life and the mount could be good (always remembering these are 20 yrs old plus)

They both look like the same thing. One is pictured from underneath, the other shows the view from above with the slot to take the leg on the gearbox.
