My son decided (just for a laugh) to see what a 1.0 ltr Suzuki Swift would cost to insure when he becomes 17 later this year, so he went onto one of those price comparison web sites, You know, the really annoying ones you see on TV.
Well what a laugh. TPF&T £3143.05, So he decided to try something else and changed the on-line form from Mr to Miss. All the other details remained the same The result was £2196.47. The difference being nearly £1000 cheaper with the same company.(the cheapest quote was £2036 and that was a girls only company)

OK, I know that young drivers are penalised for their inexperience as road users, but surely Sex discrimintion comes into it somewhere along the line. I mean £1000 expensive for the sake of one Y Chromosome ?

Insurance works on discrimination - it's based on statistics. IIRC, more women crash, but men have bigger smashes.

What strikes me as odd is that they discriminate on age, gender, but not on race. Now that is a huuuuuge can of worms!!

very good point. In terms of race I bet there is a difference one way or the other.

Or four of those, plus cabs EVERYWHERE you wanna go, WHENEVER you wanna go, and enough cash to float 500 bandy legged Breezer Girls.

Insurance companies wouldn't make it that obvious if they couldn't prove it. No company is going to put themselves in a position where they could be sued for it unless they could prove it.

Plus of course if they were mis-pricing the risks between males and females then another insurer would step in and price differently and the other company would be selected against.

They don't, because the statistics don't lie.

You are joking, aren't you? We are supposed to believe that insurance is a competitive market, but like any market that has had a chance to mature it will eventually run on a cartel basis.

No I'm not joking. Do you know how much the insurance industry lost last year?

What is your evidence that:
a) car insurance pricing is 'unfair'
b) some sort of cartel is being run?

You sound like another person who has no real knowledge of the industry but doesn't like paying the high prices being offered, so assumes that they are being ripped off?

So, if you're confident that insurance in profitable, why are you moaning about how much it costs instead of providing it?

Cobblers mate.

Insurance is expensive because of idiot drivers, fraud and scammers.

Don't tar me with that one.

They give my profession a bad smell. They should be exterminated.
