Noticed it for a while. £60 fine only I think. You see all the rich Arabs in London with Ferrari's and Lamborghini's doing it.

On some cars (RX8, Alfas) it looks better, on most though it just leaves an empty recess and 2 screw holes.

Mine is currently in the windscreen of the Mx5, unfortunately it's not me being 'cool', the front mounting bracket has broken and fallen off frown I'm awaiting delivery of a new one!

A lot of UK supercars/ sports cars run without front plates ro enhance the look. London seems to be a popular spot for this.

I love the clean look of my Chim without a front plate, but it's remains to avoid hassle/ fines.

On one of beetles the plate gets really beaten up if it's attached in the only possible place so I keep it in the windscreen. I'm a terrible person.

I had no front plate on my Westfield mainly as it would snap come near any curb or speed bump, I kept it in the boot if plod asked. I was never pulled up on it even when a copper took an interest in the car in Demon Tweeks car park. This was before the days of front facing cameras though!

I find the front numberplate on the Lotus quite useful - it's the lowest point so if it clears something, I know the rest of the car will.

Drove past an Astra the other day with a few sheets of newspaper "caught" on the bumper in just a way they blocked the numberplate

I've also seen this a lot nowadays. They have custom bumpers and want a clean look so I see why they do it, but seems to me that they're just going to attract unwanted attention and who knows what else the cops will find if they pull them over.

in the honda civic scene it was done alot because the only place to mount an intercooler if you turbo the car is in the grill of the front bumper. alot of people cut the grill bigger to allow more air to get to the intercooler which means chopping away where the number plate is mounted.

so people just sat the number plate in the front window, or got jap sized plates and mounted them to one side.

then it became a fashion so people without turbos started doing it to be in with the crowd.

I've heard that in some parts there are spates of licence plate stealing going on. So in response some keep them inside (disregarding however illegal it is).

Don't be silly.

It's the current scene guys in my opinion.

A lot of modifiers are smoothing bumpers from there original state, getting rid of number plate recess' and fog light holes. They wouldn't go through that and then stick an ugly numberplate on would they? It's a £30 fine each time they are caught at it, but it's what some are willing to pay.

I'll find some pics now
