New job on the way (hoorah!) but that means new car policy. The old mob seemed happy to pay me a monthly allowance and reimburse me per mile for buisness use.

New regs are around taking a new diesel company car with some sort of Co2 cap every three years...

Oh well, it's been fun smoking around in one of the best BMW saloons to leave the Munich factory - I give you the e39 5 series.

I really wanted to keep running it for as long as possible as it still feels so well sorted. No rattles or squeaks, no rust, no cosmetic issues, mechanicals still feel as strong as they ever did - I'm convinced they don't build like this any more...

No more creamy 231 bhp straight-six doing the work up front weeping

Car-wise, I feel a bit sad. End of an era frown

CO2 cap? Does that mean if you emit up to that cap you can no longer use the car?

Can you not afford to keep the E39 and just take the lowest possible tax option CC?

No, it means that the car choosen has to be less than a certain Co2 rating limit.

Nah, no point keeping the 530i as a weekender IMO. I've an MX5 in the garage and the wife has a nice Lexus RX was weekedn family duties. It would rarely get used and I've not got the driveway space.

The e39 was great in it's role of daily driver. Such a shame.

I will try and keep my smooth six cyllinders for as long as I can. I think the inevitable will catch most of us at some point - a dull 4 pot. Maybe when fuel is 50%-100% more.

But not just yet.

Relax, there is already a family friend who has always had first dibs on it. Plus it's worth next to nothing - they're ten a penny.

My point is that it's just a shame that I have to give up my nice car that I like and end up in something newer but 'worse' that I will not like as much and that probably costs me more money.

Is your cap 160 CO2? You just have to be a bit more inventive. No need to get a diesel yet...

Dependent on your budget you can get anything from a A5 Sportback 211hp 2.0 TFSI to something like a Polo GTI. http://www.comcar.co.uk their car chooser is great. Get it to exclude anything over 160 CO2 - you can even get it to cross reference that by max speed and 0-60 times.

New Mercedes C350 petrol also comes in under 160g/km. Not sure when it's out though.

This is getting ridiculous.......forcing people into diseasals.

One of the reasons I stay working with my employer is historic allowances - ££ to buy and run anything, fuel card paid, congestion charge paid and parking next door to office paid. And I get to use a train (paid) to see all my clients. Yey!

If I changed jobs I'm sure I'd suddenly be out of the E500 and into a 118 diesel. Or maybe E class with a tiny clattery diesel four pot.....

At least BMW make some good low CO2 cars - 118d, 320d ED, 520d.

You never know, you might even reluctantly grow to like them.

Only homosexuals drive cars with Co2 outputs below 225g. biggrin

And yes, that is the most helpful thing I can add to this thread. wink

No it's not it's excellent. The more (other) people forced to drive diesels, the more demand shifts from petrol to diesel, and the greater the price difference. That 10p+ difference will come back again

The 10p difference is only good if petrol goes down which it won't ever.
