40k-50k, 7 seats, 4 wheel drive, not a Disco.

Friend wants to chop in Disco2 because "It's slow, st and eats fuel" for Disco4 3.0TDV6, I say Touareg V6 or V8TDI, he says they need 7 seats, what should he buy?

Must be suv, not a low riding estate car/MPV, 7 seats, diesel, 40k to 50K to spend.

They're not the most usable rear seats but if you're talking about kids then the X5 35/40d must be in the running....

I agree, they're desirable and I like them but: They weigh 2.8 tonnes so they're slow, wallowy, thirsty and over engineered for extreme off road use at the expense of on road dynamics.

But they're still the best all-rounder you can buy and all seven seats are usable and are brisk with the new 3 litre. The only other option I can see is the surprisingly good but unpopular Merc R Class - better than an ML or GL for most people.

Got to be the X5, best vehicle to drive from the options on the thread, Merc GL is a big old bus and ride is not great.
