approximate respray costs
Discussion
Erm. I'm running an RRC LSE. So probably more expensive, but:
Land Rover (lookers) Battersea quoted me £7.5K
However having been to a number of other places I can get a good job done for under £3K, possibly £2.5K. All quotes I had vary between 2.5 and 7.5 really.
You could possibly get a less reputable place to do it for 1.5-2, but I wouldn;t hold out much hope for the longevity of the paintwork, et alone the quality of work.
As it's not a colour change I'm going to have it professionally mopped (cutting the paint back to restore it), which for the best will cost about £350.
Your main prob will be that a colour change will involve doing the inside visible parts of the panels, so would involve taking them off to do I thnk, which adds the cost.
Thats all I can say really, hope it helps at least

just watched the replay of the defender on wheeler dealer. They did one for £1,600 with all of the pre work being done beforehand. This included removing the roof and potentially the door cards etc internally. So with own pre work and transport on a trailer since it would have no lights etc, £2,500 seems ok.
£7.5K! sounds like London prices to me. Get it shipped to Eastern Europe there are specialist classic restorers there that could do a baremetal respray for £500. Seriously though even £2K is top end for a decent job. Don't go for a colour change as it will add 25% to the cost. I would say £1.5K for an average job.
C.J.Tallis in Hinckley has done some very good work for me and some mates over the last few years.
His price comes down considerably if you don't mind waiting a while so that he can fit it around other jobs.
He always has an interesting mix of cars in, from modern insurance repairs through to bare metal respray on classics and local race cars.

Hi there, can you provide any contact details for the Eastern European sources you mention? ThanksCan you do the prep your shelf? As in the rubbing down and the flatting, filling and masking? This is where a lot of the money goes and believe me I know as I have spent the last year re-painting my own Land Rover. It is not an easy task and I now have even mnore respect for bodyshop people
Spraying the gun is a tiny part of it of the process.
I would budget £2k to £5k at least.
I would also consider treating the chassis with Buzzweld or similar. Pointless having a shiny Defender when the RHS outrigger is about to fall off due to rot.
