Hi chaps, I have a question regarding oil on a polo diesel. I had a service yesterday by my local dealer who picked the car up and delivered it back to my house. Would a drive of 10 miles make supposedley new oil go black like old oil. On my bill it says Shell Helix. I dont have much knowledge of diesel engines, but surely it shouldnt go black that quick. Im not convinced they have changed it at all. Any thoughts.

Zippy,
this is Deja Vu,I got my company car back from the main dealers last night, along with a list of niggles that hav'nt been done, I too checked my oil and its black, I was just about to call the main dealer when I saw your post.
One thing check to see if the filter has been changed, cos it'll be nice and clean, if it aint, give em hell.
Regards

I've always wondered about this as well - we've had 2 Sharan Diesels and they've both had black syrup within a very short period of time (can't say I checked immediately after service though)

A mate of mine who has had diesels said that the oils are so loaded with detergents that they get dirty very quick, i.e. in 10 miles. Puling all crud of oil wetted parts. Ive been charged for a filter but I cant for the life of me find it to see if its new. Its not even referenced in the handbook on its location.

The oil should still be golden for at least 100-200 miles before it starts changing to black so go give em hell

ive just spoken to an independant VW man and he said its normal for diesels to get shitted up very quickly. They really should be flushed 2-3 times to stop this happening but no one ever does this. Hence the dirty oil in 2 seconds flat.

If in doubt mark your filters (oil and air) and then you can check if they've been changed. (used to do this with a suspect merc dealer... proved the bastard was screwing his customers in 14 cases)....

Our company vans seem to do the same when serviced but don't quote me. White ones as well
