Well one huge pothole has made a right mess of my little brothers Twingo RS. It's location is along the Banchory Devenick road from the South Deeside Road, going to Portlethen. It's an unlit road, and the pothole is roughly 2m wide, 15cm deep.

Its looking like two new wheels and tyres, and possibly more, it's making a very rough grinding noise now.. frown

Any idea if the pothole claim thing works?

Sorry to hear that Justin.

Not going to lie but I've heard it's one almighty nightmare claiming back. I've had to replace two tyres in the last month.. At £210 a go I may go mental if I need to do another one shortly...

Best of luck and let us know if your Brother gets anything back..

Report it.

www.potholes.co.uk

If they are aware of it they have to fix it or payout.

I'll be amazed if he's the first to report it, there is actually a sign outside the house next to the pothole with a phone number to ring.. So they must know about it. I'll get some pictures tomorrow when it's light, and report it. Will keep this updated.

Aberdeen is getting pretty bad again!
I tried reporting a few potholes last year, they never got filled in.

And a few notable ones;
King Street - mainly the bus lane heading Northbound. Also heading into the city, at the lights with the beach esplanade.
Bedford Road - At the top end at the lights and the small bridge, it's seriously like a bomb site.

Oh, and the Parkway, where it meets the top of Broadfold Road (homebase), on either side of the road is bad!

Don't get me started...

The other half burst one of the Audi's 18" tyres a couple of weeks back in Glasgow so it's been running round on a spare for the time being. Sods law, New Years eve yours truly then drove in into what could best described as a quarry and burst a second tyre and dented the alloy.

I'm now searching for a set of standard 16" wheels for it now... and if that fails, a fooking Land Rover Defender.

The most galling thing being, come the end of the month the feckers will want another wedge of my hard earned for road tax...

Happy New Year!

Did a post earlier, deleted so not to double up on posts but came across some dangerous potholes heading West of significant depth and width that if hit at a reasonable speed could cause serious damage and/or an accident.

Having seen them its not hard to imagine the damage that they will cause but I gather the pot hole claim system is vigorously fought by the councils, you need a strong case, photo's hopefully at the time of event, witness statements because as soon as an incident has been reported some of these potholes have miraculously disappeared subsequently diminishing the chances of a claim, of course I'm not implying that this particular council would do this !!!

It would be good if there were unequivocal clear rules on the policy for claiming for pothole damage.

From the council's persepective, I can fully understand why they fight every claim, there is no way they can continually inspect all their roads on a daily basis to catch any hole that appears. Similarly, when there is extreme weather and a pothole appears on every road, they can't deal with them all instantly.

And as an individual, I am fed up with all the "where there is claim there is blame and give me my spondoolies now" culture.

Having said that, we as motorists should be able to drive along a road taking normal precautions and not suffer damage to our vehicles. On the M8 at night you have no idea if that patch on the road is where a pothole has been filled or where a pothole is lying in wait for you. Similarly where you have standing water at the side of a road you have no way of knowing what its hiding from you.

So let us see some clear rules on the clims process!

Bit of an update, both front tyres were beyond repair, and one of the alloys bent, although Laws Tyres seem pretty confident they can sort this.. (Cracking service from them btw)

As the car was on axle stands we had a quick look for any further damage, although couldn't spot anything obvious.. will see how it drives once the new tyres are on

While i can undersatnd logic in the council not knowing about every pothole their claims of regular inspections does not wash when you see how long if ever it takes to get them attended to. Will "avoiding potholes" be an accptable excuse to Plod for weaving about road?

And for god sake, if you see a car coming the other way, don't flash your headlights to warn him biggrin

As long as you're not going to block off someone else I'd argue that avoiding the craters in the road is safer than bouncing through them. I avoid what I can anyway.

A year or so back, a friend of mine hit a serious hole at the side of a B road when he was doing around 50mph which subsequently blew the N/S/F tyre out and pretty much wrecked the wheel. Needless to say it was a brown trouser momment given the wet condition and the rapid deflation of the tyre however it was later that we starting to ponder what would the outcome have been had he lost control, hit the bank or worse... a car coming the opposite direction.

I'd be interested to see where blame would lie in that sort of worst case situation?

I think it would be based on whether it had been reported or not. Thats why I think its very important to report pot holes when you find them, not say to yourself "Its not my problem".

Having said that, I know it wouldn't be that straight forward.

Looking at my tyres today nice bulge at shoulder FNS looks like pothole somewhere has got me no other obvious damage so it could be a faulty tyre

Anyone reported any of the dreaded holes in Glasgow?

Watch out for the deep one on the Kingston Bridge, Northbound on the right side of the fast lane.

Having just typed that, I'm a bit worried about any deep potholes on a bridge? Where's the surface sinking to?

its not sinking, the tarmac breaks up due to water getting into the cracks, freezing and expanding the gap, then thawing, letting more water into the larger gap which them freezes again, then thaws etc all the while cars drive over the weakened bit and gets broken up pulled out of the hole.

OK thanks, although at risk of exposing my stupidity to all, the tarmac is presumable "x" inches thick, but some potholes that my wheels have sought out are seemingly deeper than what I'd think the tarmac extends to. This is my worry re a bridge although I'm probably 100% wrong
