Right. Having abused the buggery out of a cheap Argos bike (in my defence, it was cheap, and I worked there so it was even cheaper) - it managed about 1500 miles before spectacularly giving up, so it's been refunded. 1500 miles of cycling for free ain't bad...

But now winters on its way out, ish, I'd like to get a "proper" bike to replace it. But I'm still not particularly flush. I'm not absolutely desperate for one this time round, so I'll be willing to look at more than one if necessary.

What should I be looking for, and where? Is it worth me looking at a couple of LBSs? Do they tend to stock them? Obviously eBay would mean checking for original bills of sale, frame numbers, etc... is there a cycle equivalent of AutoTrader for me to be perusing?

Budget is probably about £200-300, if I can get a decent S/H bike for that rather than a crapper new one. I'm mechanically capable of looking after it, so if it needs an overhaul that'll be no problem.

Any recommendations?

Not sure about where to look apart from trade-it and ebay but I do have a bike for sale myself. No idea if its what you are looking for but give me a message if you think it might be.

It's a mountain bike made by landrover (I think the model is 'defender'), the biggest size they do as I'm a tall lad! In brand new condition, I got it about a week before I passed my test and haven't used it since having a car!

Indeed bargainous, but I can't yet stretch to that - and plus it'll be spending a lot of time locked up outside work, and I don't want anything too nice for that reason... tempting though it is.
