On my way home this morning I was nearly hit by a cyclist. I was coming out of a blind side street and edged forward and a cyclist came flying around the corner and nearly into the passenger door.

But this got me thinking. What would have happened if he'd hit? I sure as hell wouldn't want to pay for the damage but I'm sure he wouldn't either.

And what if I had a nicer car? How do you ask a cyclist to pay for the side door of an Aston or lambo?

He would probably have been hurt, whilst trying to avoid the car which had pulled out into his path.....

Why don't pedestrians need insurance? They can cause accidents too of course.

Or children on those scooter things?

Or prams?

Its a fair question though. I have seen many near missed in London where cyclists have jumped red lights and I have seen them hit pedestrians in the same circumstances. So why shouldn't they carry insurance to pay for damage they have caused? Or does the average household insurance cover this?

We should just replace all insurance products with just one 'Idiot Insurance'. Your premium is determined by how much of a feckless idiot you are but covers you for everything.

Naturally, there are people on here who would be uninsurable.

Because cyclists go faster! You cannot insure children.

Once we get all car drivers insured can we then look at cyclists.

Until then leave the lyrca clad folk alone.

Enforce the rules we have don't invent more rules.

Because someone is disobeying the current laws why on earth would they follow additional laws.

I guess he'd be making a claim on your insurance for a new bike and also a large personal injury claim for any damage you did to him. I suppose if the police get involved then you could be looking at due care and attention as well.

So you pulled out and a cyclist nearly hit you, what would have happened if it had been a motorbike doing 40mph or an HGV, or a bus full of school children.

Perhaps you should get on bike, probably safer for the rest of us.

So probably not a 'proper' cyclist then, just a bike user, just like there are millions of 'car users' in this country but very few drivers.

iirc if a cyclist is a member of British Cycling then they are covered for third party insurance and it may be the same for other cycling organisations.

Actual lol.

9/10 for vitriol. 1/10 for effectiveness (but that's nothing to do with your text and everything to do with the interpretation skills of the reader)

It's nothing to do with speed - it's about causing accidents, which any of the above can do.

The point is, I'd be fine with forcing cyclists to have insurance (I have it), but only if that was also enforced for all road users who have the potential to cause accidents. Otherwise it's hard to argue that cyclists should have it, but drunk pedestrians who step into the road and cause an accident shouldnt...

It's not just insurance, they should also have to pay road tax.

There's no such thing as road tax. I think you mean they should pay vehicle excise duty, and no they shouldn't.

I think we should get people to pay VED on every pair of shoes they own too, just to be safe, although I suppose we could also let them SORN them, as long as they promise not to walk on the road with them.
